38063 | Aquila first appears at Hampton, NH when he is granted 6 acres for a house lot, June 1640. In 1644, he was granted an additional 6 acres of 'upland meadow and swamp' which he sold to his brother, Thomas when he removed to Newbury, Mass. He was induced to move to Newbury in 1646 - Newbury Records: "Granted to Aquila Chase, Anno 1646, fower acres of land at the new towne for a house lott and six acres of upland for a planting lott, where it can be had, and six acres of marsh where it can be had, also on condition that he doe goe to sea and do service in the towne with a boate for four years." (this 4 acres was located on the NE corner of Chandler's Lane, now Federal Street, and the 'way by the Merrimack River', now Water street, in present day Newburyport, as evidenced by the sale of the lot several years later.) This inducement to remove to Newbury would indicate that he was a mariner or fisherman and Joshua Coffin in his 'History of Newbury' states that it is a Chase family tradition that Aquila was the first person to pilot a vessel across the bar at the mouth of the Merrimack River. On May 11, 1667, Aquila acknowledged that he sold to his brother, Thomas Chase of Hampton, all his land in Hampton excepting a dwelling and one acre and a half of land which had been sold about 20 years before the date of these presents. (Old Norfolk Co deeds, 2:122) Before moving, he and Ann and his brother-in-law, David Wheeler, were seen 'gathering pease' on the first day of the week, and they were presented to the Quarterly Court at Ipswich, 9/29/1646 and again for the same offense on 3/30/1846/7, but the constable reported that the parties were not there but 'were gone to Newbury.' A deposition presented at the Quarterly Court, Ipswich, 9/25/1666, mentions Acquilla Chas, aged about 48 years. | Family F2498
