38322 | Claris E. “Tommy” Cox, 99, of Gandeeville, died Sunday, May 29, 2005, in the Ravenswood Care Center, Ravenswood. He was born February 4, 1906, a son of the late Perry Clayton and Martha Jane Anderson Cox. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Lawson Cox in 1984; one brother, Orville Cox; one sister, Beatrice Bickerstaff. Mr. Cox lived the majority of his life in Roane County. In his early life, he spent a short time working in the family business. Later, he worked as a carpenter build houses in Roane, Jackson and Kanawha counties. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Joe Evans of Spencer; a son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Janet Cox of Clarksburg; a sister, Evelyn Taylor of Princeton; a brother, Harold Cox of Belle; four grandchildren, April Custer of Clarksburg, Blake Cox of Clarksburg, Cindy Nutter of Waldorf, MD and Nathan Evans of San Marcos, CA; five great grandchildren, Cody Custer, Perry Cox, Dylan and Jacob Nutter and Noah Evans. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, May 31 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gandeeville Cemetery, Gandeeville, with the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. There will be no visitation. Aug. 26, 1952 Putnam Man Crash Victim Pliny Truck Driver Killed By Minister Putnam County chalked up its second highway fatality of the year, Monday at 4:30 p.m., as a 52 year old man was thrown from his truck and killed when the vehicle was struck from behind by a passenger car. Killed in the accident on State Rt. 17, at Frasier's Bottom near Winfield was Clifford William Smith of 5 and 20 Mile Creek near Pliny. The driver of the automobile identified as the Rev. James A. Thompson, Pastor of St. Marks Methodist Church at Lima, Ohio, and his five year old daughter, Jane, escaped injury, the minister's wife, Mrs. Lulu Thompson, 42, was treated at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston for head cuts. State Police Cpl. D.J. Gilbert said the minister gave this account of the accident. He started to pass the truck but cut back in behind it when he saw a pedestrian crossing the highway ahead. The truck then stopped suddenly, apparantley to avoid hitting the pedestrian, and the Thompson car smashed into it. Smith was thrown from his truck and the back of his head was crushed when it struck a road sign. Smith had worked as a route driver for the Blubaugh Bakery for the past four years. Before that he was part owner of Smith Grocery and Meat Company on Carolina Street in South Charleston. He had been living on a small farm near Pliny for the past year. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Anna Smith, a step-daughter, Mrs. Faye Willey of Hinton, two sisters, Mrs. Lawrence L. Thomas of Charleston, and Mrs. Charles Matkit of Lakewood, Ohio, a brother, Bernard M. Smith of Charleston and four grandchldren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Barlow-Bonsall Chapel, under charge of Rev. R.J. Chenoweth. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home. Charleston Gazette Wed. Aug. 27, 1952 Smith, Clifford, William - Service will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in Bartlett Mortuary Chapel. Rev. R.J.
