38729 | HARRISON, James M., Judge - 1832 - 1922 Stones Chapel Cemetery, Walker Twp, Henry Co, MO Clinton MO - Judge James M. Harrison, son of Wm. Henry and Esther Harrison, was born in Mason county, West Va., May 24, 1832, and after an illness of over two weeks passed away about six o'clock Sunday morning, March 19, 1922 (at the home of his son, M. A., south of Delmar). Therefore, if he had lived until May 24 he would have been 90 years old. He was next to the oldest of eleven children, five sisters and six brothers, all who have preceded him to the other world excepting on brother, Josiah, of West Virginia. He also has living one half-brother, Dr. Earl Harrison, and two half-sisters, Miss Lizzie and Mrs. Miller, all of West Va. When a boy he moved with his father to a farm in Putnam county; from there to Jackson county, where he was married on Jan. 10, 1851, to Esther Fisher. He came to Missouri in 1856, and during the first year lived at the home of his brother-in-law, Leonard Fisher, who had located in Henry county in 1855. He entered his home place in 1857. His first marriage was blessed with five children: Christian, who died when almost 8 years old; Mary Elizabeth Wagner died April 17, 1901; John W. died June 18, 1910; two children survive - James Henry, of Gainesville, Texas, and M. A. on the old farm with whom he had made his home for about twenty-five years. He had eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. His wife died Dec. 5, 1877 and on Jan. 2, 1881, he was married to Margaret P. Greer, who died May 18, 1896. To this union were born two children, Jeffey Otmer and Clement Jefferson, both deceased. When a young man he united with the M. E. Church South, and we presume he had been a stewart of Stone's Chapel since the church was built. He had been a subscriber for the St. Louis Christian Advocate since he first came to Missouri. He was a Confederate soldier and during his entire life since attaining his majority he had been a staunch Democrat. He served eight years as a judge of the county court, his first term having been in the early eighties and his second term from 1894 to 1898, during which time the present courthouse at Clinton was erected. He was beloved by the whole community. He was of a cheerful disposition and enjoyed having his friends and neighbors around him, and was especially found of little children. Even in his last illness, although suffering intense pain, he would occasionally get off a little joke. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Shockley, at Stone's Chapel, on Monday, at two o'clock p.m. after which his body was laid to rest in the cemetery by the church. - A Relative. From Chuck Jeffey BIO HARRISON, James M. source: 1883 History of Henry Missouri , National Historical Co., pg: 734 --- Judge James M. Harrison was born in Mason County, West Virginia, May 24, 1831. His father was William H. Harrison, and his mother's maiden name was Esther Allen, both of old Virginia families. She died in 1854, but the former is residing on the old home farm in Western Virginia. He is a hale old gentleman of seventy-four years, and is living with his third wife. James was the second of eleven children, six of whom are living, two besides himself in Missouri, Caroline, (wife of William A. Pfost) and Virginia, (wife of James Porter.) He grew to manhood on his father's farm, and in his twenty-first year was married, January 10, 1852, to Miss Esther Fisher, of Virginia. In 1856 they came to Missouri and settled near Calhoun, where they lived on the "Draper Farm" two years, moving thence in 1858 to his present home. He entered 160 acres of land and bought more as his means would allow, and his farm now contains about 700 acres of fine land suitable for stock growing or agriculture. Mr. Harrison is one of the substantial farmers of the county, and was chosen at the recent election judge of the county court, for the second district. During the war he served about six months with Price. and participated in the action at Drywood, and was also at the capture of Lexington. He afterward served in the state militia, and was at Sedalia at the time of the raid upon that place. In 1876, having suffered from poor health for some time, he went to California and spent one season in the mountains. Recuperating his failing health he has since devoted his attention to the duties of the farm. Judge Harrison lost his wife on the 5th of December, 1877. She left four children: Mary Elizabeth, (wife of John W. Wagner), John W., (whose wife is Anna Rutlege), James H., (who married Mattie Birge) and Mordecia A. January 2, 1881, he married Miss Margaret P. Green. They have one child, Clement J." Source: Henry Co, Mo. web page The judge's obit and another bio are out there too. 2nd Bio: ....Judge Harrison came to Missouri in 1856 and during the first year lived at the home of his brother-in-law, Leonard Fisher, who had located in Henry County in 1855. He entered his home place of 160 acres in 1857 and made his home thereon as herein stated. .... source: HARRISON, James M. : 1919 History of Henry Co MO, Uel W. 38743 | He does not appear until the 1870 census, age 20, so he could have been missed in 1860. His dob in 1900 is Oct 1846, but if brother was born in Mar 1846, that's a little hard to believe. He was 21 when he married in Oct 1871, so I think it's more likely he was born in Oct 1850, missing the 1850 census and left off the messy 1860 census.Cemetery record shows birth as 1850. | Fields, James Riley (I5881)
