38881 | In Memoriam Miles Board was born June 5, 1833, near the mouth of what is now know as Board Run, Jackson county, lived all of his life on his farm on Frozen Camp and there yielded his spirit to the God who gave it May 20, 1922, age 77 year, 11 months and 15 days. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Jackson county and always received the greatest confidence and respect from the people at large, having served them as Justice of the Peace and one term as Federal Grandjuror; but his personal loss will be felt more particularly by his family and enighbors, whose counsel and kind acts will linger in their recollection long after his looks will be forgotten and whose influece will live forever. Morally, father Board was always in the right, never shrinking from duty but alway lending a helping had and willservice, which alwyas reveals a true christian spirit. Early in life he became a member of the Methodist Protestant church, and remained a firm, steadfast believer in Jehovah to the end. No person was ever sent empty handed from his door or refused an accomodation which he by sacraficing could grant. He was a good neighbor, kind husband, and loving father whose home was known to many as a place where they could receive the most kind and courteous treatment and where love and affection was supremem guilding influence in the family circle; owing to the tenderness and meekness of the father and gentleness and loveing kindness of the mother, who preceded him but three years to the land of rest where they are now united never again to be separated To be good and to do good were the two leading object set forth in his life; to develop a perfect character by rendering perfect service and at no time in his life was his true christian character more forecibly revealed than in his last sickness when he refused to complain, faced death not with any dread or fear, but with that unfaltering pure life, approached death like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams. Of his children there now living, E. C. Board, C. H. Board, J. A. Hyre, Mrs. D. M. Walters, of Gay; O. J. Board, of Blakely; Mrs. Frances Smith, of Parkersburg; Mrs Emma Harris of Ravenswood; R. L. Shaved His Beard on Eightieth Birthday -- Jake Rupe Given Surprise Party Special to the Times One of the most enjoyable events in the Cheshire community was the birthday dinner given in honor of Mr Jacob Rupe's eightieth birthday on Sunday June 2, 1929, at the home of his daughter, Mrs David Briggs. At an early hour guests to the number of sixty assembled with well-filled baskets. Mr David Briggs was sent for Mr Rupe. Then came a double surprise. Mr Rupe was astonished by the number assembled, but he had sacrificed his familiar beard and many of his closest friends failed to recognize him. At the noon hour all gathered about the loaded tables, A fine birthday cake prepared by Mrs Briggs and decorated with eighty rose and blue candles was placed in front of Mr Rupe. when he had blown them out, Wilbur Butcher returned thanks and all proceeded to do justice to the splendid dinner, but it was found impossible to clear the table. At a late hour in the afternoon the guests departed wishing that Mr Rupe would celebrate his birthday at least once a month. J. Rupe Spent All But 3 of 87 Years Here Large Crowd Expected to Attend Rites at Cheshire at 2 Sunday Except for two years in Missouri, the late Jacob Rupe spent all of his 87 years in this county. He was an industrious, honest man and had acquired considerable property, it is believed. One of his chief interests was the Masonic lodge to which he had belonged more than half a century. He was a member of Cheshire Lodge F&AM, Pomeroy Chapter, No80, RAM, Bosworth Council, No 46, R&SM, Ohio Valley Commandery No 24, K.T., and Scioto Valley Capsistory, 32nd Degree Mason of Columbus. In addition to the three children and two brothers named in yesterday's paper as his survivors, there are six grandchildren, Merrill, Beatrice and Helen Dorothy Briggs, William and Mary Reynolds. The mother of the decedent's children, the former Mary Ellen Ritchey, died Nov 14, 1896. Funeral rites will be conducted Sunday afternoon at the Cheshire Bapist church at 2 o'clock with REv HW Wilber of Gallipolis officiating. Masonic reites will be conducted by the Knights Templar Commandecy of Pomeroy, according to his final request, which also asked that the Knights Templars of Gallipolis be given special invitation to attend the rites in a body, as were members of the Cheshire lodge. A very large turnout of Masons and of others is looked for. Masons from Cheshire, Pomeroy, Gallipolis and Vinton attended and took part in the rites for Jacob H Rupe at the Cheshire Baptist Church Sunday afternoon. Even aside from the Masons, the attendance was very large, the edifice being crowded to its doors while many stood on the lawn. Glenroy Ewing and Carl Shaffer, both of Pomeroy, officiated as leaders of the Masonic group. four ministers took part in the services - Rev HH Wilber, Gallipolis, Rev SA Phillips, pastor0 of the Baptist church, Rev HN Snider, the new ME pastor of Cheshire and Rev Mr Gardner, pastor of the Middleport Christian Church. In Memory Jacob H Rupe Jacob Henry Rupe, son of Washington and Elizabeth Rothgeb Rupe, was born in Cheshire township, Gallia county, Ohio, June 1, 1849, and departed this life at his home near Cheshire on Sept 25, 1936, aged 87 years, 3 months, and 24 days, He was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Ritchey on Aug 1, 1878. His daughers. The Rupe Family When Mr Jacob Rupe of Cheshire came down Saturday he brought with him a deed that takes the cake in the old document contest started recently by Arthur Grover. Mr Rupe produced a deed given on Dec 12, 1814, by Jacob Roush to Paul Roush for the 60 acre farm near Cheshire now owned by Mr Rupe. Consideration was just one hundred dollars. The deed was drawn by Nathaniel Gares and was witnessed by Phineas Matthews and George Swisher, two well known former residnets of Cheshire township. The deed shows the land to be originally acquired by Jacob Roush from the US government on Nov 16, 1812. Other owners since that time besides Mr Roush and lastly Mr Rupe, were John Roush, Paul Roush, Frank Boice, and Lafayette Gaston. There may have been others, but Mr Rupe does not recall them. A bit of interesting family history was brought out during a conversation with Mr Rupe, who is the oldest Mason in Gallia county. He has been a member of that body for 61 years, and is now a member of all York Rite and Scottish Rite degrees, is a member of the Eastern Star and Aladdin Temple, nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Mr Rupe's father, Washington Rupe, came to Gallia county from Pennsylvania in 1812. He married Elizabeth Rothgeb and they became the parents of seven boys and two girls. Five boys in the family are yet living and according to Arthur Rupe, Kyger merchant, son of Frank Rupe, their combined ages now total 399 years. They are Jacob, D. Perry, William, and Frank of Cheshire and Washington of Greenburg, Ind. Brothers and sisters who have passed on are Jonathan and Joseph Rupe, Mrs Frank (Adaline) Butcher, and Mrs Wash(Caroline) Arnold. The latter had been married twice. Her first husband, James Berridge, was wounded in the civil war and died in a war-time hospital in Gallipolis. The Rupe family is widely connected in the upper end of Gallia County and have long been recognized as the salt of the earth. I found this in the Gallipolis Daily Tribune for Friday, September 25, 1936. JACOB RUPE, 87, ENDS LIFE BY HANGING Body Found in His Barn By Daughter Early This Morn Failing Health Over Long Period Made Him Despondent -- Was Mason More Than 50 Years -- Three Daughters, Two Brothers Survive. Jacob Rupe the oldest male voter in Cheshire precinct, ended his life by hanging early this morning. His lifeless body still retainign a slight warmth, was found hanging in his barn about 7'oclock by his daughter Cora. The daughter supposing her father was still in his room, had gone to the barn to milk. She found the barn door not only closed but tied on the inside. Strangled To Death A ladder had been used by the aged man to tie a rope around a beam that connected two haymows. Then he made a noose, put it around his neck and stepped off a shorter ladder. When found his feet were dangling about the bigger ladder and were about three feet above the barn floor. Death had been caused by strangulation; the fall had not broken his neck. Dr. W. Lewis Brown, corner said. In a wagon in the driveway of the barn was found a shotgun that had been previously hidden, and it's presence prompted the deduction that Mr. Rupe had contemplated sucide with that weapon. Coroner Brown and Sheriff Hatfield reached the Rupe home, which is about a mile from Cheshire and in the direction of Kyger, around 9:40. Some notes hastely scribbled as Mr. Rupe prepared to take his life were found. They were hardly legible or coherent, it is said. Weak and Despondent From other sources it is learned that he was despondent because of his poor health and that he had intimated he might seek sudden decrease of his suffering. Mr. Rupe was a visitor here Tuesday, conversing with a Tribune reporter, he revealed that he was weak and suffered a good deal and was worried about his vision and hearing. However lately, his health had been better than it was in the summer or spring, for he had been beadfast the greater part of both seasons. He was 87 years old on June 1 and always evinced some pride in being the oldest male voter in his bailiwick. In Gallipolis he was a familiar figure for many years and his easygoing genial nature had made him many friends. He had been a Mason for more than half a centuary and the members of that order, young and old, were fond of "Uncle Jake" Jacob H. Rupe was the son of Washington and Elizabeth Rothgeb Rupe and was born and reared about a mile west of Kyger. Two brothers, both younger than the decedent survive. William, an invalid, who lives on the site of the old homestead, and Frank, the youngest, who lives a mile farther up Kyger creek. Another brother, David Perry Rupe, 76, of the same neighborhood died June 16. He was the father of Mrs. H.B. Bradbury of this city. Mr. Rupe was twice married; first to Mary E. (Molly) Ritchie, a native of the Wilksville area, died on August 1, 1878. Of this union three children survive: Miss Cora, at home; Carrie, wife of David H. Briggs of Cheshire, and Helen, wife of William Reynolds of Middleport. Some years after Mrs. Rupe's death, on Dec. 7, 1897, he married Sadie R. Daniel of Addison tp., but they were later divorced. The body was removed to J. L. Coleman's funeral parlors at Bidwell and this afternoon word was received that the funeral services will be held at the Cheshire Baptist church at 2:30 Sunday. Mr. Rupe was a member of the Poplar Ridge Baptist church. Burial will be at Gravel Hill under the auspices of the Masonic order, by Coleman. | RUPE, Jacob Henry (I157)
