39409 | John House: Pioneers of Jackson Co John Carney is said to have been a soldier in the Revolutionary War in the East, and to have lost two sons in the American Army. One account says Thomas Carney was in the Patriot Army also, but he would have been but fifteen when peace was proclaimed, so I think it doubtful if it be correct. Jackson County in the Wars Revolutionary Soldiers John Carney. A Revolutionary soldier who is said to have lost two sons in the war. Came to Jackson county (then Mason) about 1813 from the Buckhannon, Upshur county, settlements, with his son, Thomas. Settled about a half-mile about the Harpold Ford on Mill Creek. Deceased before 1820 as he is not listed on the Mason County census for that year. Ref: "West Virginia in the American Revolution." John Carney served in Capt. Abraham Sheppard's Co. in Berkley Co. "Taken prisoner 11/16/1776" John Carney listed as Papist in 1748-9. Was in Lord Fairfax Rent Rolls in Frederick Co. Va. for 320 acres in 1759. Oct 1765 mentioned Glassford and Co. account. Posted bond for administrator of the estate of his father Thomas Carney, deceased March 19, 1774. He was also listed in the will of his Uncle John. Prince Wm. 39412 | John House; 'Jackson County William Henry Rowley had two brothers, but their father dying when he was small, they became separated, and he lost sight of them. W.H. was “bound” to a shoemaker on Long Island. It is not stated whether he came to West Virginia or not. A son, however, did, and his daughter married Joseph Anderson, as previously related. This son’s name was Harry Rowley, and he may have been the “old man Rowley” who was living on the east side of Sandy, between the mouth of Trace Fork and the bridge, about 1835. He and his wife both died with the Sandy Fever afterward. Of his children: Thomas Rowley married Tabitha Parsons, daughter of George Parsons (Trace Fork George), and they went to Ohio. Huldah Rowley married John Smith Carder, and lived for a time on Trace Fork, and later of Joe’s Run. Nancy Rowley married first Philip Adams (probably son of Dr. Adams), who died in Middleport, Ohio,. Was said to have been the smartest man J.A. ever knew, to have had no education. Her second husband was Jacob, son of Thomas McGlothin. | Rowley, William Henry (I8439)

39421 | Joseph T. BURNS - became a resident in Jackson county, West Virginia, in 1868, settling upon a farm in Union district, where stock-raising and the cultivation of the soil occupy his time and energies. He was born in Jefferson county, Pennsylvania, November 25, 1842, a son of Liberty and Ellen (Knox) Burns, who are now deceased. He is a direct descendant from the family of the great poet of Scotland, "Bobby Burns," as his countrymen still love to call him. In Jackson county, West Virginia, October 9, 1870, Joseph T. Burns wedded Deborah Hughes, who was born in this county, March 5, 1849. Robert and Mary (Rhodes) Hughes were her parents, and Job Hughes, who was one of the pioneers of Union district, was her great uncle. Her father is deceased, her mother living in Roane county, this State. In the war between the States Joseph T. Burns enlisted in the Union army, Company I, 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and served from July, 1861, to November, 1862, when he was discharged on account of a gunshot wound received in the right arm in the seven days fight before Richmond. Liberty Burns, father of Joseph T., served in Company B, 105th Pennsylvania Infantry, and was killed at the battle of Antietam, his right leg torn off by a ball. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph T. Burns were born: Mary L., December 16, 1872; a daughter, August 26, 1874, died same day; Burwell and Berkley, December 18, 1875; Cora May, February 26, 1878; Bertha, March 1, 1880; Nellie Isabella, January 27, 1882. All the living children are at home, and the family post office address is Cottageville, Jackson county, West Virginia. This is one of the biographical sketches of Jackson County residents from "Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia... Special History Of The Virginias ..1883." | Family F1407
