A heart attack brought unexpected death to George W. Johnson, 60 year old school teacher of Ripley, as he stood before his class at the Turkey Fork School in Putnam County on Monday afternoon of last week. He had spent the holidays with his family in Ripley and had returned to his school on Sunday night, and had planned to retire from the teaching profession at the end of the present term. Funeral services were held from the Vail Funeral Home Friday morning at 10 o'clock with Rev. Vairl Winter of the Elizabeth Baptist Church in charge and burial was in the Fairplain Cemetery. Mr. Johnson was born in Jackson County, the son of the late Bent and Virginia Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pearl McGraw Johnson; three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Karr of Clendenin, Mrs. Georgia Tolley of Ripley, and Mrs. Betty Anderson of Clendenin; and one son George Johnson Jr. of Columbus, Ohio. One son, Charles Johnson, was killed in action in France during WWII. (Friday, 9 Jan 1948). George W. Johnson, son of Joseph Benson and Virginia Johnson, was born at Fairplain Dec. 6, 1887, departed this life Dec. 29, 1947, aged 61 years and 23 days. He was married to Pearl McGraw in 1917.
