A son, Charles, lived in Wirt Co, formerly Wood Co, until a few years before his death, which occured at the home of his son, Charles, in Jackson Co. He came from Fauquier Co soon after the War of 1812. He had a number of slaves and was Sheriff of Wood Co. Of his children: Susan m. Raleigh M Kyger Sarah m. William H Smith, their son William H m. a Jackson Martha m. a Sims Levin Steptoe A Rector married a Sherman and lived at Little Sandy. Charley Rector, who was a candidate for Sheriff of Jackson Co, was a grandson of the Charles Rector above, who must have moved to Jackson County in the '40s. Mason county tax lists for 1805-14 Mason Co censuses of 1810 and 1820 lists children and spouses, including Hannah, married Julius Campbell This sketch taken from "Pioneers of Jackson County", by John House, it appears in the section "Lower Mill Creek" Sayre Family The founder of the Sayre family in Jackson County was David Sayre. He was a noted hunter and Indian fighter who came to Mill Creek in 1801, from Greene County, Pennsylvania. He and his wife became members of the Methodist Class, which was organized at the home of Joseph Parsons in 1803, by the Reverend Noah. Of their children, I have: Daniel Sayre, born in Greene County, Pennsylvania, on May 22, 1783. He came to Mill creek with his father in 1801. He married Sarah Hall, daughter of Joseph Hall, and located on the Mill Creek Flats. He died in 1880, at the advanced age of 97 years. Of their children: David Sayre was born on Mill Creek, October 20th, 1810. He was married four times, his first wife being Minerva Stone, and the second was Marthena Hill. He died at Pleasant View, in 1904, aged 93 years. Daniel B. Sayre, born in 1823, died in 1874. Thomas Sayre, married Agnes Harper, and lived on West Creek, a few miles below Letart. Joel Sayre, another son of David Sayre, lived one mile below Ripley, on what is known as the old "Sears" farm. He married Amelia Rice, a daughter of Shadrach Rice, who was in Wayne's campaign against the Indians. They raised a large family, among whom were: Jacob Sayre. Charles Sayre. Ann Sayre, married a Little. Rachel Sayre, married John Harpold. Catherine Sayre, married John Flythe. Jacob Sayre, mentioned above, was the oldest child. He was born on the farm in sight of where Ripley was later built, in 1816, and moved to Sissonville, in 1858. He lived one year in Charleston and later went to Indiana. He returned to Ripley about 1890, when his sister, Mrs. Little, kept house for him. Before his death in 1904, he moved to East Liverpool, Ohio. After his death there, his remains were brought back to the old Ripley Cemetery. His wife died in Indiana, and his children grew up and remained there. Jacob Sayre was noted, in his younger days, for his strength and activity. It is related of him that once on the occasion of the visit of a circus and menagerie to Ripely, a resident having become the worse from "one drink too many", had gotten himself engaged in an altercation with some of the employees. Six or eight of them had pitched onto him, and were belaboring him sorely, until Sayre, who had vainly tried to keep his friend out of difficulty, interfered, and not only whipped the men who assaulted him, but cleaned out the whole fighting force of the circus. He could and would hit hard if necessary, but is described as a peaceable, inoffensive and sensible citizen. Charles Sayre lived on the home place for a while. It was in the hewed log residence of Joel Sayre, near him, in which court was ordered held at the second session in June, 1831. William Bonnet was jailer, and William Bonnet, Jr. and Silas Carney were guards. It was their business to keep the prisoners on their own side of the "dead line" which marked the limits of the jail, separating it from the court room. Rachel Sayre, daughter of David, married John Harpold, and lived on Mill creek, above Ripley. Catherine Sayre, a daughter of Joel, was a deaf mute, and married a man named John Flythe, a like unfortunate, with whom she had become acquainted while attending the State School, at Staunton, Virginia. She died on Clay Lick, a few years ago. It was said, by those who witnessed it, to have been a most affecting sight to see her husband "all fenced around by an eternal silence", take his last farewell from his companion. Ann Sayre Carter was a daughter of Thomas, and a grand daughter of Daniel and Sarah Hall Sayre. Hugh Sayre, of Reedy, Roane County, was her brother. She married first a Flesher and second, Dr. Carter, of Reedy. There is another family of Sayres living in the Great Bend, on the Ohio side of the River, about Apple Grove and Letart, quite extensive in numbers, and connected with the Sayres on the east side of the river, though no one with whom I have talked could say in just what way they were connected. It is quite possible they may be descended from the same David Sayre, or reaching further back to a former generation. The Sayre family tradition is that originally four Sayre brothers came to this county as soldiers with Braddock's Army. A Daniel and Benjamin Sayre were the first settlers at Sandyville, a more detailed account of them and their families will be found in the Sandy Valley section of this history. At the age of eight years the latter was taken captive by the Inidans and held by them until sixteen years of age. They pierced his ears and nose, and at length sold him to the white settlers for a barrel of whiskey. Mason Co tax list Jesse Hughes jr 1805-06-07-10-11-12-13-14 From Fran: After marrying Susan Mock, they lived in what is now Jackson County, WV on Cow Run, located on Mill Creek between Ripley and Cottageville. He was on the tax list in 1805-14 in what is now Jackson Co. and was in the 1810 census of Mason County (00001-11010), and in the 1820 census there (321101-21011). His age apprears to be older than we have found elsewhere although his age and the marriage dates of his parents have not been documented. Whether Jesse moved or missed being counted or died in Jackson County after this, we do not know, but his children were married there, and Elias, Nancy, and James are found in the 1860 census. He was a counselor to King George III, and was given a patent to a large tract of land by the King, this land being located near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. He was captain in Colonial and the Revolutionary wars and was a man of high rank and prominence. The old parchment recording his land patent is still carefully preserved by his descendants. Peter Hogg founded a family which has been widely dispersed over West Virginia and other states. One of his descendants was Thomas Gory Hogg, son of Peter (II), and his wife, Patsy Abney, and the grandfather of Doctor Hogg. ---- The following is data I found and don't want to lose, but I don't know if they are the children of Peter or Thomas. Schotts) was born 1748 in Hampshire County, Colony of Virgina, and died June 13, 1815 in Pendleton Co., (W)VA, and that he married Barbara Borer in 1770 in Randolph County, Va., daughter of Jacob Borer and Barbary Tschudi. Jacob Helmick was a prosperous farmer who settled in Hampshire County, (now Pendleton Co., WV) in Tygarts Valley. In the will he made dated June 13, 1815, he leaves the bulk of his estate to his two sons, Adam and Abraham. During the Revolutionary War he served in Captain Stump's Company, Lafayette's Command. In "The Henckel Genealogy" it states that Jacob was probably the son of Jacob A. Helmick born 1712 of Richmond County, Virginia who in turn was the son of John Helmick son of John Helmick born 1682 in Jamestown, Virginia. The Helmick History continues: "The name Helmick has been traced in a history of the Pennsylvania Dutch to near the city of Strasbourg in Alsace, Germany. It is supposed they came over with the large emigration about 1700 to l730 and landed at Philadelphia, PA. Authentic history of our immediate ancestors begins with four brothers who lived on Red Stone Creek near where Uniontown, PA now stands. They all fought in the Revolutionary War." "Early Records of Hampshire Co." contains a will dated 10/19/1778 made by Jacob Borer and probated 11/10/1778. This will lists his wife, Barbary and eight children: Barbary, Charles, Mary Jacob, Elizabeth, Thomas, Martin and Rosanna. Executors are his wife, Jacob Hankel and John Wilson. Sec. are Christopher Ermintrout and Henry Judy. Witnesses are: Jacob Helmick, Jaco Ross and Chrles Bower (Borer). There is also a record in the Hampshire Co. "Index to Land Deeds" showing that Jacob Helmick purchased 100 acres of land from Thomas Lord Fairfax on 3/6/1780, recorded 3/14/1780. The land was located on South Branch. They landed at the mouth of Leading creek and stopped at Hamilton Kerr's. Timothy purchased a hundred acre lot at the mouth of Silver run, but Daniel, not liking the appearance of the country, bought his brother's interest in their boat and passed on to Cincinnati, where he settled. For an account of Timothy Smith's mill, machinery and mining, see particulars under the heading of coal. He first lived in a small cabin on the river bank at the mouth of Storys run. In 1814 he built the house that is still standing on the hill side, about 100 yards above the old salt works. The children of Timothy and Polly (Connor) Smith were as follows: Charlotte, born 1797, married Elias Jones, their descendants still live in Cheshire John Adams, born in 1800, married to Deborah Paine, sister of Seth Paine Betsey, born in 1802, marrried John S, Giles, Sr, of Rutland Sally, born in 1804, married Obediah Ralph, of Morgan township, Gallia County Anselm, born in 1806, and died in 1816 Timothy, jr, born in 1810 and died the same year Polly, born 1812, married M R Matthews, late of Vinton, Gallia county and is still living in the 71st year of her age, the only survivor of the family of Timothy Smith. She is the mother of our fellow townsman, Mr Charles Matthews, to whom the writer is indebted for the facts above stated as well as for other items in this history. ~~~ Log Cabin Remeniscences Vol II, Meigs County P & H Soc: The Smiths, and Other Early Settlers of Meigs County written by Charles Matthews Washington DC, Jan 18, 1908. The Smith family of Silver Run, Daniel and Timothy Smith, with their brother-in-law, Bradbury Robinson, came from Vermont in 1805. With their families, household goods, wagons and stock, they floated down the Ohio River on a house-boat, stopping at Belpre, mouth of Big Hocking and mouth of Leading Creek. After looking at the land and visiting the settlements on Leading Creek, Timothy concluded that he would go on (sic) farther to find a home, while Daniel Smith and their brother-in-law, not satisfied with that part of the new counrty, concluded to go on. Accordingly, they purchased of their brother his share in the boat, and after landing Timothy, with his family, at Silver Run, pushed out into the river and floated on down until they came to Cincinnati, where they concluded to stop. They finally purchased homesteads back on the hills, on Hamilton Pike, in Springfield township, Hamilton County, where many of their descendants still reside. Timothy Smith was born in 1770 and married to Polly Connor, who was born in 1772. They had seven children, as follows: 1st: Charlotte Smith, born May 24, 1797, and married Elias Jones, October 13, 1814. She died Oct 4, 1871. 2nd: John Adams Smith, born February 22, 1800 and married Deborah Paine November 22, 1822. He died Jan 10, 1840. 3rd: Elizabeth Smith, born January 9, 1802, and married John S Giles June 7, 1818. She died Nov 8, 1842. 4th: Sarah Smith, born July 10, 1804, and married Obediah Ralph September 19, 1822. She died Feb 3, 1875. 5th: Anselin Smith, born 1806 and died 1816. 6th: Timothy Smith, Jr, born 1810 and died at the age of nine months. 7th: Mary Smith, born December 19, 1812, and married Moses R Matthews April 10, 1831. She died December 24, 1893. Timothy Smith erected among the first (if not the first) grist mills in the county. It was a tread mill, run by horse power, located on the bank of Silver Run. He also mined the first coal, and shipped the same to Cincinnati on log rafts. In this work he was aided by the above named Cyrus Giles and by the late John Woods, from North Caroliina, who died in Middleport about twenty-five or thirty years ago. John Adams Smith, above mentioned, was the man arrested by Virginia officials in 1824, and confined in the Point Pleasant jail for running off slaves, and rescued by his Ohio friends, so ably described in the Pomeroy Telegraph, in 1875, by the Hon. It is bounded on the west by Vinton county, south by Gallia county and north and east by Columbia and Rutland townships respectively. . . Salem township was organized in 1814. It then included Wilkesville, and was a part of Gallia County. The first election for township officers was held April 20, 1814. Felix Grimes was elected one of 3 trustees and one of 2 fence viewers. The next year, Wilkesville being organized as a separate township, it became necessary to choose another . . .[however, Felix was not named as one replaced - did he not live in Wilkesville? bb] Felix Grimes and Adam Long were neighbors near Dexter run. Felix Grimes being implicated in the Irish rebellion of 1798, left his native country and came to the United States, in company with Blennerhasset, who was a cousin of Mrs Grimes. The exact date of his settlement in Salem is uncertain. Mrs Grimes died shortly afterwards; it is said she was the first person who received Christian burial in Meigs county. Her remains lie on the farm of Mr Haskins, about a mile from Danville. CARLETON, William W. - Born here September 27, 1825, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Dalton) Carleton. The parents here in 1823 and Thomas died here April 2, 1848 and Elizabeth died Feb 4, 1837. William married 1st November 20, 1852 to Ann Burthistle, born in 1826 in County Wicklow, Ireland and died 1853, daughter of Thomas and Nancy (Smith) Burthistle. William married 3rd Ellen R. Jenkinson on September 9, 1879, who was born here Sept 23, 1844, whose parents came here in 1837. Her father died Sept 1, 1880 and her mother Emilia (Martin) Jenkinson still living (ca 1883). William had m 2nd October 19, 1856 to Elizabeth Price born March 22, 1853 and died May 7, 1875, daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Grimes) Price, and they had 5 children. Of his family two sons and 4 daughters are now living in this and the adjoining county of Meigs. Gardiner F Chase, his son, born in Danville Maine in 1811 came to Alexander twp in 1817 and now lives on the farm on which his father settled in that year. When this was published, his great great grandson still owned the land. John Merril Chase died in 1853 buried in Chase Freewill Baptist cem. in Athens co. He and wife had children: Mary b. 1799 d. 1802 John Merrill, jr b. 1801 Mary (Polly) 1804 The hsitory shows that John Merrill Chase was born at Newberry Fort, MA 3/1/1774. Came to Athens Co. in 1815 He died 1853 and is buried in the Churchyard at the Chase Church which was built in 1794 on land that he purchased, and is still there. Francis Chase was born June 30, 1810 and was 5th son of Abel and Abigail (Nelson) Chase, one of the first settlers of the county. Francis married Louisa Knight of Pomeroy, Meigs Co. and had: Adaline, Amanda, George, Harrison, Alonzo, Abel, Sarah and Henry. Harrison killed in Civil war. Abel Chase, grandfather of George W. born December 4, 1774 at Hallowell, Maine, married Oct 20, 1797 to Abigail Nelson of Gilmantown, N.H. and on September 9, 1817 and with wife and 11 children started for Ohio and here by spring of 1818. Abel died here April 10, 1852, age 78 leaving a 2nd wife. Abigail died November 4, 1849. The Chase family are descended from Aquilla Chase who came to America in 1639 from Buckingham County, England. Bishop Philander Chase and Chief Justice Chase descended from Aquilla and collaterally related to Abel Chase. George W. Chase married December 3, 1863 married Anna Wood of Lake County, Ohio. Lived Rutland, Ohio. CHASE, Abel - Born here June 24, 1847, son of Francis and Louisa (Knight) Chase, both here in 1817. Abel married here on February 9, 1876 to Julia Skinner born July 23, 1853, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Burwell) Skinner who were here in 1817. Abel and Louisa had 2 children in 1883. Abel in Civil war. John Merril Chase " My grandfather John Merrill Chase was born March 1, 1774 at Newbury-Port Massachusetts, his parents at that time lived in a block house built by Aquilla Chase , one of the three brothers who came over from England and from whom all the Chases are descended . At the age of twenty one, he went to Maine and bought a farm in Kennebec County . A few years later his father and family followed him and settled near him . In 1798, he married Miriam Murray , a daughter of Anthony and Brial Murray . I have not the day or month , but it must have been in the winter for the ceremony had to be postponed on account of a deep snow storm which kept them in doors for some time . I have been told how high it drifted and how long they were kept prisoner, but I think the wedding was postponed one week .(Date of the marriage was March 29, 1797) Grandma was dressed on that ocassion in a fine white painted muslin dress with small red flowers on it . It was preserved many years but is not now in existence. Grandpa's hair, which was black , was worn at that time in one long braid , tied with a black ribbon .The braid being so long that he could easily sit on it . The minister with the bride and groom joined in the after dinner dance , as was the custom . In the year 1815, some eight or ten famlies emigrated from Kennebec Co. Maine to Rutland , Megis Co. Ohio . How they learned of the rich lands of Leading Creek , I do not know , but in September of that year, Grandpa started to that land of promise , with his wife and seven children : John , Polly , Jefferson , Hanna , Gardner , Miriam and Abigal , and a young man named David Dudley , and a neighbor with a large family , by the name of Maloon . Grandpa and Mr. Dudley who lived with them as one of their own family, stopped at Barnesville , Belmount Co. Ohio and spent the winter . The next spring they again started for Rutland . When he reached Elder Sterns place in Athens Co., he offered inducements to hold him there during the summer of 1816 , and the following fall bought and moved on the place where he lived and died, and there he now lies . Their youngest child Lydia was born there January 25 , 1817 . Grandpa was deacon of a F.W.B. Church for many years in Maine and was chosen for that position when a church was organized in Ohio , which position he filled till his death , being familiarly called Deacon Chase . His daughter Miriam , my mother , married in 1833, and moved to Rutland where she said her father started with her , far from Maine eighteen years before . When I went on the stand and looked over the assembly , and thought of the good times going to Grandpa , I thought that Auntie should be remembered. So I added something like this ; I have spoken of the good times I have remembering going to Grandpa's , that there was another element in the household that is very essential , to make an old homestead complete --an old maid . The older ones marry and go to their own homes . They have children to take with them when they go back to visit , that turn the house topsy -turvey, there is the old maid to put it in order , and see that they are always fed and cared for, that the home goings may be happy ones , and I would say to bless the old maid that did so much to make our goings to Grandpa's such happy events , as to be remembered today with so much pleasure ". We do not know who else was in the party that came by wagon train to Ohio. At one point William, age five, got tired of riding and got out to walk. When they saw he was no longer in sight, they went back to hunt for him and found him about a mile behind, walking unconcernedly along following the wagon tracks. In 1825, Andrew married Theodocia Blake, the widow of Comfort Blake. Her maiden name was Collins and she was the dughter of a fisherman off Cape Cod, Mass. They had two sons, George and Adam Acree, who were in the Confederate Army. Charles L. Acree, son of Lewis, was in the Union Army, as was Peter C., the father of the two boys mentioned above. Lewis Acree was born in Bedford County, Virginia, in 1783, and died on Mill Creek in 1844. Mary Cleek Acree was born in Bath County, Virginia, in 1802, and died August 1th, 1843. My informant "Aunt" Hannah Harpold Staats, now deceased, described Mary Acree as one of the "kindest and best women that ever lived". Lewis Acree moved to the section known as Kentuck, in 1845. At the age of eight years the latter was taken captive by the Inidans and held by them until sixteen years of age. They pierced his ears and nose, and at length sold him to the white settlers for a barrel of whiskey. He served his country in the Revolutionary War and spent his last days in Illinois. James Gibson, the father of our subject, was born and reared in Virginia, and became a bricklayer. At the age of 18 he was united in marriage with Nancy Smith, whose father was a native of Ireland and her mother of Germany. Her death occurred in the Old Dominion and he then wedded Patience Ochiltree. Emigrating to Illinois, they located on the farm which is now the home of our subject, and in a log cabin on the whild prairie they began life in true pioneer style. Both are now deceased, Mr Gibson dying at the age of sixty-six years. There were ten children born of the first marriage: Catherine and Elmira, who died in Virginia; Mary, who is living in Nebraska, Amy, who was married and died in Clay Co, Ill; Smith, of this sketch; Elijah, who is living near the old home in VA; Emily, who died in that State; Permelia, who died in Richland County; Temperance, who is living in the Old Dominion; and Mason, who died in Montana. | Family F24960
