He was one of the Middle Fork pioneers, settling on the Deem place, on the Middle Fork of Reedy, being the first settler on that farm. After staying there a few years, he moved away, finally bringing up in Ripley. John D. Keeney died June 10th, 1855, in his sixty sixth year. Rachel Burdett Keeney died September 11th, 1861, aged sixty seven. Both are buried at Ripley. He lived in Ripley as early as 1839. Of his children: Alec Kenney, married Elvira Rader. D.J. (Jack) Keeney, married a daughter of John Koontz. He was Republican candidate for Sheriff of Jackson County, in 1870. Maria Keeney, married "Wash" Burdett. Caroline Keeney, married John Mackintosh. He had a large family of children, among them were: Nancy Cleek married Ben Baker, and lived near the mouth of Reedy until 1840, when Baker sold his farm to Hayes Paxton. Adam Cleek married Dollie Pfost. Elizabeth Cleek, the youngest daughter, married Robert R Riely. Also, I presume to be Peter Cleek's children: Peter Cleek, born about 1833. Frank Cleek. F, USA on 9 Aug 1862. He was discharged in 1864 because of bad health. By the time of the 1870 U.S. Census he had moved to Henry Co., Missouri where he received an invalid pension in 1875. His doctor advised him to travel for his health. Little good it did him as he was accidentally shot on 11 July 1877 in Burrell Springs, Wyoming. Minerva continued to live in Clinton, Missouri through the 1880 U.S. Census. She filed for a widow's pension in 1888 in Baker Co., Oregon . . . she again filed for a widow's pension in 1890, this time from South Denver, Colorado. | Family F1271

RADER Mother F W W 57 OH PA PA John House, "Pioneers of Jackson Co": George W. Rader was born (from record on tombstone) July 9th, 1814, and died September 18th, 1868, aged fifty four years. He married Nancy Miller, a daughter of Kitts Miller, and Aunt of Judge Warren Miller. George W., commonly called Wash Rader, lived on the Charley Shinn farm, on Station Camp, where his daughter Ellen, who married Shinn, now lives. It is said that he built a cabin near where the pike crosses Joe's Run, when he first married. In letters to Abe Rader, who was in the west, written just after the war, he mentions a son, Alonzo, and two daughters, Ellen, who married Charley Shinn, and Eliza. These letters throw light on the conditions in Jackson County, just after the war. Wash and Abe Rader were Union men, the remainder of the family all being Confederates. Under date of May 21st, 1865, he writes – "We have had a very early spring, and we have had some very high waters. On the 9th day of May, the creek was over my floor, as it was in 1852. It was twenty three inches over my house floor (probably an old house nearer the water). I had a nasty time. It only took off three hundred rails for me. I am nearly done planting. I have about two acres to put in a the Gabbert place yet, and then I'm done. I have some corn that is large enough to work. My wheat and grass all looks well. Stock is high. I sold my big oxen the first week in May, for One hundred fifty dollars. They would have weighed a thousand pounds a piece. That was seven and a half cents a pound. The thieves is still a stealing horses, grain, chickens, meat, etc. I have Bill Harper's Charley, and two weeks ago Thursday night, some rascal stole him and took him off. I don't know where, and the next morning about seven o'clock, he came back. Two weeks ago they stole two horse from Tom Wilkerson, and I have not heard of them since." Under date of July 3rd, 1868, he writes – "The weather here is extremely hot for the last two weeks and very dry for two weeks today. I have been cutting wheat for two days, and I have just one hundred dozen cut. I will have fifty more, I think. Our county is almost taxed to death, my tax last year was Seventy three Dollars, and this year we are building a new bridge at Ravenswood, and we will have to pay Nine thousand dollars for the bridge. In the last two years, we have had to pay over Sixteen thousand dollars for bridges in the county. My taxes for township purposes is Thirty eight dollars this fall. I will be strapped, I know. There is a great deal of party strife here at present. Our Rebels feel very big since Johnson's trial is over." On the 4th of October, 1868, Charley Shinn wrote Abram Rader to announce the death of Wash, on the 18th of the previous month, after "laying sick" "about five weeks", he first "took" the "information of the brain", followed by "billious feaver" and "newmonia". Dr. "Bectal" "on Grass Lick" "tended on" him three weeks. He also states that the fall was so wet that "corn has pretty near all rotted". So reads the inscription on one of the tombstones, a stone volume giving the bare outlines of the life of one of Mill Creeks first pioneers. This much will be remembered while the stone last. "John Harpold was, and again, he was not, and the time of the beginning and the duration of this days." This much and no more, the headstone tells us, unless there be some verse of eulogy which I did not copy. Then, we know from the presence of the stone that here is the spot where his bdy was laid away when life had fled. Another stone standing at the head of another mound and bearing the legend: "Rachel, wife of John Harpold, died January 18, 1868 aged seventy-seven years one month," tells us that he was a married man and that he walked three years alone and then lay down by the side of his companion in sight of the spot, where together, they fought the battle of life. A simple calculation and we may know that John Harpold was born on the first day of September 1788. An obituary notice makes it November 2, 1788. Rachel Harpold was born January 12, 1791. BOARDE Rebecca RADER MotherL F W W 64 WV VA VA John House, "Pioneers of Jackson Co": Michael Campbell Rader, the second child of James Rader, was born in Mason County, in 1807, and when James Rader moved, which was at the same time his father came, or soon after, the child's mother carried him on a feather bed in her lap. The child would have been over a year old, and it must have been before the birth of John Rader in 1810. This fixes the date of coming to Elk at 1808 or 1809. M. C. Rader owned one thousand acres, including the Ben Bord and Jesse Allen (H. Parrish) farms. He moved to the Mill Creek side of the hill in 1837, and built his cabin at the end of the long low point, above Mr. B. B. Bord's, where the big cedar trees are standing. Later he built on the site of the residence of Mr. Bord. The silver maple tree in the front yard, he set out in 1869, the white pine in 1842. Soon after moving to Mill Creek, M. C. Rader built a little water mill against the high rocky hillside where the spruce pines grow, across from where he built his first cabin. This mill was washed out by floods two or three times, and as often rebuilt. There is a millstone to be seen at the Tom Rader house up on the point from the ford, where Joe Parsons is said to have built his cabin. It is twenty two inches across, and four inches thick, and may have been used in the mill above mentioned. It has, so the story goes, done service in a horsemill, in grinding corn for the manufacture of johnny cake and corn dodgers, which were eaten with bear meat ninety years ago. Now it is degraded to the baser service of a doorstep, at the gate. There is a pleasant fiction that the Michael Rader farm was traded for these hand mill buhrs. An Anthony Rader, living in Nicholas County, made a "bear trap", Isaac Fitzwater also made one. These were used by Anthony McClung, of Nicholas, and were both in existence at Summersville some years ago. Michael C. Rader married Rebecca, daughter of Jacob Hyre. He was born in 1807, and died in 1880, and his wife born in 1813 and died in 1882. They were married in 1832. A copy of their family record, is as follows: Michael C. Rader, born November 29th, 1807, died April 14th, 1880. Married Rebecca Hyre who was born August 26th, 1813, and died May 11th, 1882. They were married June 7th, 1832. Their children: Jacob Webster Clay Rader, born April 18th, 1834. Nancy Margaret Rader, born October 14th, 1835. Mary Rader, born in 1837, married Ben Bord. Sandusky V. Rader, born October 12th, 1837, died September 28th, 1838. Elizabeth Catharine Rader, born August 16th, 1839. Nancy Ann Rader, born March 21st, 1841, died January 9th, 1848. There were sons born in 1833 and 1844, who died in infancy. Inscriptions on gravestones which are in Ben Bord Cemetery read: M.C. Rader, born November 29, 1807, died April 14, 1880. Aged seventy-two years four months. Rebecca, wife of M.C. Rader, born August 26, 1813, died May 11, 1882, aged sixty-eight years eight months. Michael Campbell Rader was the second son of James Rader and was born NOvember 29, 1807, somewhere in Mason County. The Raders moved to Elk Fork when he was a year or two old. In 1832, he married Rebecca Hyre, daughter of Jacob Hyre, Sr., and in 1833 or 4 moved over the hill onto Mill Creek, where he owned 1000 acres of land, including the Bord and Hamp Parish Farms. He built a little cabin at the turn of the road where the sand lies so thick. He put up a water mill by the steep rocky hillside opposite. The mill was washed out and rebuilt several times. There are two of M.C. Rader's children buried in the Rader Graveyard. Nancy Ann, daughter of M.C. and R. Lowther Family Robert Lowther, probably connected with Col. William Lowther, came from Harrison County to Ripley about 1831. He was one of the first members of the Ripley bar, and for several years, postmaster of the place. He was born March 24th, 1795, and died April 22nd, 1856. His wife, Mary Lowther, was three years his senior, and died five years earlier, or in 1851. They both sleep in the old cemetery at Ripley. By them lies a son, E. D. (Dunck) Lowther, born in 1830, died in 1897. Over his grave waves a faded American flag, showing that in "the times that tried men's souls", his rang true. Honor to all the graves, the flag waves over, be they never so lowly and peace to the ashes that sleep beneath. Andrew Lowther was another son. Mary Lowther, a daughter, died in Baltimore. Major Henry Harpold's wife was also a daughter, and the last of the family to cross the bar was Mrs. Minerva Smith, widow of the late Judge Joe Smith. She died a few years ago. Robert Lowther, as surveyor, first laid off the town of Ripley, in 1832, and for a quarter of a century, he was a distinguished and progressive citizen. | Family F3723

William and Elizabeth (Vanziel) ROWLEY were his parents, and with them he came to the locality where he now resides in the year 1820. The country was then in a pioneer stage of settlement, and was a part of Mason county, Virginia, the county of Jackson having been erected since that date. The first pair of boots made in Jackson county were made by the father of Henry ROWLEY, for one John Nesselroad, the greatest hunter in the State. Henry ROWLEY married Amanda Buffington, of Buffingtons Island, Jackson county, May 26, 1831, and she died November 5, 1878. Their children were: Joseph, born October 18, 1831, lives in Adams county, Ohio; G. C., August 26, 1833, lives in Jackson county; Magdalene, March 3, 1836, resides in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Cloe, August 11, 1838; Nancy C., February 14, 1842, died February 10, 1847; Henry C., May 25, 1844, lives in this county; William A., March 26, 1846, died February 7, 1864; Elizabeth, May 29, 1849, died January 11, 1850; Nancy L. V., March 12, 1853, lives in Cattaraugus county, New York, and James, May 19, 1860, lives in Jackson county. In the 1861 war, Joseph V. was lieutenant in Company E, 9th West Virginia Infantry, Union service, and William was a member of the same company. WIlliam died of injuries received in the service. Grosvenor C. was a member of the 11th West Virginia Infantry, Company K, and was wounded and made prisoner at Lynchburg. Henry C. served in Company F, 4th West Virginia Infantry. In Racine, Meigs county, Ohio, Henry ROWLEY wedded Mary, daughter of George W. and Mary Ann (Bondinot) Bell, July 31, 1879. Her parents still reside in Meigs county, where she was born April 4, 1825. She was a widow at the time of her marriage with Mr. Rowley and the mother of Letitia A. and Walter D. Homes, the former born September 12, 1847, and residing at Point Pleasant, Mason county, West Virginia, and the latter, born July 19, 1849, residing at the same place. A daughter of her first marriage, Florence L., born April 12, 1852, died November 6, 1858. Mr. Rowley was supervisor of roads in Jackson county for nineteen consecutive years during the time when the roads were being opened up, and they could exact daily work of that officer, if desired. The Chase family lived on Mill Creek two miles below Ripley. The father was Lawrence Chase, who was born in 1833, and died in 1907. He married a Hogsett. Their children, Benjamin Chase, a color bearer, was killed in the Confederate Army. He married Elizabeth Wetzel. Jonathan Chase married a sister of G.W. Sayre. Henry Chase was born April 8th, 1836, and died April 5th, 1906.
