The Carpenter Family
The early ancestors of the Carpenter family were of English descent. Representatives of the family emigrated to America long before the Revolutionary War. Some settled in New England and other in New York, Pennsylvania and other early colonies. The immediate ancestors of the pioneer Carpenters of West Virginia emigrated from New York to what is now Bath county, VA and settled on the Jackson River in 1746. . . Thomas Carpenter was wounded at the battle of Pt Pleasant.
One of the earliest settlers of Upper Harper District was John Carpenter, veteran of the War of 1812. He was born near the Jackson River in what was then Botetourt County, VA. . .
