'History of the Harper District' by MAC Hopkins
Armstead Harper was the son of John and Rachel (Taylor) Harper. He came here with his family, who were the first to settle in the wilderness, now Harper District, about 1835.
Armstead Harper settled near of the mouth of Flat Fork where he had bought several hundred acres of land . . . .
The home of Armstead Harper was a great community center for miles around. Mr Harper was an upright and honorable Christian man. It was here that the first church of Harper District was founded. This was the Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Armstead Harper and his family were its first members. Here at the home of Mr Harper the first sermon in the district was preached. Asa Harper taught the first school in the district in a cabin on Mr Harper's farm in 1839. On this Armstead Harper farm is the first cemetery of the district. Mrs John Harper being among the first to be buried there.
Harper District received its name from Armstead, Asa and Thomas Harper, who made the first permanent settlement there about 1835.
Kanawha Co marriages:
Lowe, Levi, and Mary Harper, Mar. 18, 1856.
