  Notes	Oldest Man in County is Dead "Uncle Peter Rhodes of near Harmony, answers last call" The death of Peter Rhodes, for many, many years most affectionately known as "Uncle Pete" which occurred at the family home near Harmony, on Tuesday, January 20th, removed from active life unquestionably the oldest man in Roane County, if indeed not the oldest man in the United States. Peter Rhodes was born on the 25th of January, 1807 in Rockbridge County, VA and at the time of his death he was 115 years and 5 days of age. He was the son of Christopher Marion Rhodes, who was a soldier in the war of 1812. The deceased always maintained that he had a clear recollection of the departure of his father for the army at that time. He was for a long time a resident of this county, and for several years lived near this city on the Arnoldsburg Pike, but a number of years ago, returned to his home near Harmony, where he has since resided. Mr. Rhodes was ever an upright and honored citizen and possessed hosts of friends and many relatives. He was active up until a short time before his last illness, and for years was the "champion old-time fiddler" for miles and miles around. He was first married to Miss Louise (Letha) Board, who died some 55 years ago. Of eight children born to this union, six still survive: Robert Rhodes, W. B. Rhodes, Perry Rhodes, Mrs. R. A. Whiting (Ruth) and Mrs. C. J. (Jane) Poling. His second wife was Miss Elizabeth Wilson, who died in 1911. Messrs: Dennis, Dayton and Ferd Rhodes of this city were grand-nephews of the deceased. Rhodes had been ill for some months immediately preceding his demise, and suffered much pain. He became converted and took great comfort in the fact. One of his last messages was that he loved everyone. Burial services were conducted at the home by Rev. C. F. Price, after which the remains were laid to rest in the C. M. Rhodes cemetery. Jackson Co. Past & Present by Mary Rhodes Whited Peter Rhodes (Roane Co. Oldest resident) was born in Rockbridge Co., VA, Januray 25, 1807, died January 30, 1922, age 115 years and 5 days. He was the son of George Christopher and Catherine Peters Rhodes of Rockbridge Co. and later of Ripley, Jackson Co., WV where he died, age 95 years having lived from 1762-1857. He was a farmer and innkeeper in Virginia and served as an ensign in the War of 1812. Peter remembered his father going to this War. He married Catherine Peters, June 2, 1801 in Virginia but I don't have his first wife's name. Christian Rhodes of Boteourt Co., VA, born about 1742 died 1831, was Peter's grandfather. He was a farmer and received a land grant South of James River in 1768. Peter and Samuel (brothers) moved near Gay, Jackson Co. about 1834, Peter married Letha Board, daughter of George and Betsy Board of Ripley, Jackson Co. He was a farmer and later bought a water powered grist mill a mile or so above mouth of Trace Fork where he lived and ran the mill from about 1865 until 1922 with son Marion. Buried in Rhodes Cemetery at Ryan. Peters's second wife was Elizabeth Wilson. Peter's and Letha's children - Robert R. Rhodes - married - Mary Casto, Amanda - Rev. Martin Casto, Sarah- Robert Garrett; Benta Rhodes - Harpold - Jane - Benjamin Poling; Ruthie - Whiting Perry Rhodes; Marian Rhodes -Artimisha Westfall.
