John was one of six children born to William Law and his first wife, Mary Burnside. He married Nancy Anne Burnside in Harrison Co., VA (WV) in 1834. She may have been his second wife, as his first child was born in 1827. John was a farmer and carpenter. He and Nancy raised seven children, two of whom died of dysentery in 1849 (William, age 5; Rebecca, age 3).
In 1849, John purchased land on Smoke Camp, Freeman's Creek, Lewis County, and was living there with his family at the time of the 1850 census. In 1860, he received a social preaching license from the Methodist Episcopal Church (Weston Circuit). In 1876, when the congregation became too large to meet in his home, he and Nancy sold land (for $1) for the building of a place of worship. John and his sons, Moses and Calvin, built the Law Chapel Methodist Church, which was dedicated to the Methodist Episcopal Conference in 1878.
John and his wife, Nancy, are buried in the cemetery behind the church.
"John Law. One of our oldest and best citizens, departed this life Tuesday the 11th inst., about 70 years. He was a devoted Christian and a great stay to the M. E. Church, of which he was a member." Weston Republican, Saturday, 22 April 1882.
