      Robert John Finkel, age 90, of Gahanna, Ohio, passed on peaceably to be with his Lord Monday morning, May 12, 2014. Bob was born December 9, 1923 in Marietta, Ohio.
      He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Louise (Augenstein) Finkel and his brothers David and Walter.
      He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lois (Casto); sister, Joan (Andy) Andrew of Santa Rosa, California; brother, Mark (Geri) Greenville, North Carolina; brother, Bill (Patty) of Prior Lake, Minnesota; son, Chris (Mary); daughter, Connie (Stephen) Bird; son, Rob (Lori); daughter, Jan (Bob) Paynter; son, Tom (Karla); daughter, Sue O'Sail; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, along with many dear friends.
      Bob attended St. Mary's in Marietta and was selected to attend Buckeye Boys State in 1940 and graduated in 1941. He enrolled and attended Marietta College before going into the Navy in 1942 to give service to his country in its hour of need. After the war Bob attended Xavier University and graduated in 1950 with a BS in English and economics. Bob's life was characterized by his Christian faith, love of wife and family, and a dedication to his work (33 years as a sales representative for Kruse Hardware Co. in central Ohio). Nonetheless, Bob was blessed with a call to his faith that he did not take lightly.
      His compassionate heart and loving arms extended with service and duty into many areas of need. To name a few: 'The Rosary for Unwed Mothers', the 'Joint Organization for Inner-City Needs, his parish food pantry of which he became Conference President, the Mid Ohio Food Bank, past President of The St. Vincent DePaul Society, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. His faith led him to McArthur Ohio to help with the St. Francis Center and extended yet further into supporting struggling families in Scioto and Brown County. Bob was a life member of the Gahanna VFW Post 4719 where he fulfilled functions as Post Surgeon and Post Jr. Vice Commander. He was a member of the Honor Color Guard for 18 years. He was also a 64 year member of the American Legion. For the past 17 years Bob has been on the Ohio LST Amphibs Board of Directors. In 2002 Bob was honored by the City of Gahanna, Office of the Mayor, Proclamation of Bob Finkel Day. He was a lifetime member of St. Matthews Catholic Church. Arrangements are being handled by the SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 Johnstown Rd Gahanna, Ohio.
      Visitation will be Thursday, May 15, at 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew The Apostle Church, 807 Havens Corners Rd., Gahanna, Ohio, Fr. Ryan Schmit officiating.
      Bob's entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 N. High St., Lewis Center, Ohio.
      All are welcome, following the entombment, at the Gahanna VFW Post 4719, 75 W. Johnstown Rd. at 1:30 p.m. for fellowship and a luncheon to celebrate Bob's life.
