Youth, 19, Hangs Self in Jail Cell
Williamsburg - A 19-year-old Williamsburg youth died in the City-County Jail here early Tuesday when he used bedsheets to hang himself. Randolph Gay Rhodes, whose address was listed as 471 Richmond Road, was found dead at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday by the jailer shortly after police had visited the cell to serve an additional warrant on the prisoner, City Sgt. William B. Dorsey said.
Rhodes, a former Newport News resident, was jailed early Monday on charges of reckless driving, failure to heed a red light and siren, and improper equipment, Dorsey reported. Later the same day, the youth was served with a warrant for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Police returned to the jail at approximately 5:40 a.m. Tuesday with a warrant charging Rhodes with being a fugitive from Roanoke for auto larceny.
At 6a.m. Rhodes asked the jailer to place a phone call for him and when the jailer returned at 6:15 a.m. he found the prisoner, who was pronounced dead by Deputy State Medical Examiner Dr. Joseph D Brown III.
Rhodes had told authorities his family lives at 416 Dunmore Drive in Newport News.
