From Midland Daily News (May 3, 1941)
Three Midland County residents are dead today and five others are critically inured as the result of a head-on collision on M-30 a mile north of Gordonville shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday. Sheriff Ira M. Smith, who investigated, described the crash as the worst in Midland county history. The dead are: Marshall King, 27, of rfd 2, his nephew, Adrian King, of rfd 5, and George Banning, 17, of rfd 2. Double rites for the Kings will be held at the Homer Methodist church tomorrow and services for the Banning boy will be held at the Gordonville Methodist church at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Remaining in critical condition in Midland General hospital today are: Judson Beebe, 14, rfd 2, who sustained a fractured skull; Virginia Kennedy, 17, rfd 1, with fractures of both legs and serious lacerations; Eleanor Strine, 16, of 514 Bacon street, a fractured leg and severe cuts; Phyllis Rogers, 19, of 1114 Adelaide, serious lacerations and other injuries; Melvin Beebe, 19, of rfd 2, who suffered fractures of the pelvis and hip and other serious injuries, was taken to Saginaw General hospital. He was reported in critical condition at noon today. Sheriff Ira Smith today could make no official explanation of the accident. The 18-year-old Beebe youth was the driver of the south-bound car and was accompanied by Banning, who rode beside him in the front seat, and his younger brother, Judson, was in the rear seat. The three were enroute from Gordonville to Midland where they intended to go to a movie, according to relatives. The northbound machine was driven by Marshall King. Sheriff Smith said. His nephew, Adrian King, and the three girls were passengers in his car. Marks on the highway indicated a possibility that the King machine had overturned and rolled several times before smashing into the left front of the Beebe car, according to Smith's unofficial theory. Officials said Banning was dead when taken from the Beebe car. The impact, which reduced the King machine to a mass of twisted metal, threw Marshall King onto the shoulder of the highway and he was dead when help arrived. Adrian King was dead on arrival at Midland General hospital, it was reported. City police, dispatched by radio when the call came in, rushed to the scene and assisted in taking the victims to the hospital, supplementing ambulance facilities. A double funeral service will be held at the Home Methodist church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon for Marshall King, and his nephew, Adrian King. Rev. Edgar M. Powell of the Church of God will be in charge. Marshall King will be buried in Homer cemetery, and Adrian King in Breckenridge cemetery. Marshall King was born September 20, 1913. he leaves his wife Agnes, two daughters, Mary Ellen, 7, and Loretta Ann, 5; one son, Donald Dean, 2, and his father, Guss King.
