Robert Ova Vannoy, 62, of Charleston went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, following a short illness and a brief stay at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
Robert was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, friend and mentor to everyone he encountered.
Robert was loved by all who knew him and will be remembered for his kind spirit, willingness to help his friends, family and others in need, and his steadfast love for the Lord. Too numerous to count, homes and buildings scattered throughout the Kanawha Valley were touched by this man's "carpenter hands" during his 40-years career as a general contractor.
There is not a family member in the area that will not remember Robert for a special project he completed in their homes. Most recently, Robert worked as a substitute custodian for Kanawha Count schools and Flynn Elementary and Ben Franklin Career Center.
His love for the Lord was never more evident that through his leadership at Davis Memorial Baptist Church, Charleston. Robert was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, a Bible study teacher and a worship leader. Robert was also a former deacon and member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. In 2010, Robert was honored as "Father of the Year" at Davis Memorial Baptist Church. He was a graduate off Sissonville High School and attended Greenbrier Military Academy and West Virginia Tech as a student and an outstanding football player. Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and travel in his spare time.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Ova and Gladys Vannoy; brother, James Vannoy; and sisters, Genlee Boggess and Delores Boggess.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Coleen; sons, Brian Vannoy of Charleston and Roger "Justin" Vannoy, his fiancée, Sarah Woody, and son, Rowan, of Berkeley Springs; brother and best friend, Roger (Dianne) Vannoy of Charleston; sisters, Patsy (Jack) Spearman, Joanne Paxton and Kitty Thatcher, all of Charleston, and Margaret (Tom) Mitchell of Woodstock, Ga.; many nieces and nephews; and a loving church family.
Service will be held at noon Thursday, March 3, at Davis Memorial Baptist Church, Chandler Drive, Charleston, with Pastor Roger Vannoy, the Rev. Alex Lopez and Dr. David E. Mitchell officiating.
Burial will take place immediately following the service in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
