Run Over Twice By Tractor
High voltage electricity from a fallen power wire and a "run-away" grading tractor which twice passed over his stunned body, were described Satruday as the tragic elements in the death of Samul L. Rardin, well-known Akron grading contractor.
Mr. Rardin, aged 71, died Friday afternoon while being taken to Massillon city hospital after one of the most unusual series of accidents ever reported in the district.
The elderly man had gone to State Route 21 a mile from Massillon, where one of his six sons, Robert, was superintending the road grading work for Johnson & Johnson, Akron contractors.
According to workmen, two power wires had crossed and burned apart with the sputtering ends dangling on the ground. After waiting nearly two hours for power company linemen to arrive, Mr. Rardin attempted to move the wires aside with a rope. Dampness in the rope conducted the charge of 22,000 volts through his body, knocking him to the ground.
Simultaneously, the charged wire swung against the tractor being driven by Forrest Sherliag of Canton. He fell from the vehicle as the electricity flared on the metal and the tractor, moving in reverse, passed over Mr. Rardin's prostrate form.
Failed to Stop
Robert Rardin raced to the machine and instead of stopping it as was his intention, the gears went into forward speed and again ran over his injured father before it could be stopped.
Coroner T.C. McQuate of Stark county said he was not able to determine whether Mr. Rardin died of electric shock or tractor injuries. He was conscious when the race to Massillon hospital began.
Mrs. Rardin died at their home, 954 Eastland Ave. six weeks ago Friday after a long illness.
Mr. Rardin had been active in contracting work in Akron since 1916. In recent years his sons have managed the business but Mr. Rardin had never relinquished his active interest.
Many miles of Akron streets and Summit county roads have been graded by his firm.For years he had been closely associated with Hollinger & Davidson and was held in high regard by business associates.
He leaves six sons and two daughters. Besides Robert, they are Clyde, John, Walter, Marshall and Fred; Mrs. Fred Beal of Akron and Mrs. Cora Alvey of Detroit. A sister, Mrs. Myrtle Stout, lives at the Rardin home.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Grace M.E. church and burial will be at Tallmadge.
