  Notes	William Riley Cemetery, Harper District, Roane County Owner: Dana Whited Marker of William 'Squire Bill' Riley, one of the early pioneers of Harper District, Roane County. He and his brother George Wade Riley purchased two tracts of over 10,000 acres there according to two deeds (Jackson County)when Harper District was part of Jackson County. Hopkins William Riley, son of Elijah & Sarah (Carter) Riley, was born in Harrison County abut 1816. He was married twice. His first wife was a Miss Messenger of Gilmer County. He became a pioneer settler of upper Harper District about the time his brother, George M., came here in 1850. To his first marriage there were three daughters; Ann, who married Benjamin F. Conley, Sarah , who married John M. Romine and Lou, who married Lesley McKenney." Mr. Riley's second wife was Mary Ann Jones, a daughter of Edmund and Malinda (Carr) Jones, who came to Roane County from Hardy County, WV. She was a sister of Elijah, Issac and Jacob Jones. Elijah Jones will be remembered as the father of Jacob K. Jones, one of Roane County's best school teachers. He was elected and served one term as the superintendent of the Roane County Schools. The children of Mr. Riley's second marriage were: Issac I., who married Lula Goodwin, a daughter of Hiram Goodwin, William Married Dora Burdette, George M. Married Harriet Monroe, daughter of M. V. B. Monroe, Malinda married Mar Canley. Luvernnia married a Mr. Sinnett and Arletta Married a Mr. Lucas. William Riley settled and made his life time home on Cox's Fork, on what is now called the old Billey Riley farm. At one time there was a post office there called Jimgo. There were no better people and no better neighbors that the Riley families. We could always know them by the way they wore their shoes and boots. They alwys ran both shoes and boots over to the right. The Riley's were of Irish descent.
