    • Will of David Coughenour
      In the name of the Benevolent Father of all, I David Coughenour of Cheshire Township, Gallia County, Ohio, do make and publish this my last will and testament.
      Item 1st: It is my will that all my just and honest debts and funeral expenses be paid and that a suitable monument be erected at my grave and the grave of my deceased wife.
      Item 2nd: I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Mary J Coughenour Six hundred dollars.
      Item 3rd: I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Augusta King, three hundred dollars.
      Item 4th: I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Derthula Hooper, three hundred dollars
      Item 5th: I give bequeath and devise to my sons, John M Coughenour, Albert Coughenour, and my daughters Marilla Evans, Ann E Briggs, Esther V Lyle, Luella Butcher and Minnie Coughenour, the farm I now reside situate in the Township of Cheshire, County of Gallia, and state Ohio, containing one hundred and forty (140) acres more or less equally between them share and share alike on condition that they my said seven last named children be required this, that they pay said daughters Mary J six hundred dollars, Augusta three hundred dollars and Derthula Hooper three hundred dollars.
      Item 6th: It is my will that my two daughters: viz Mary J and Minnie Coughenour shall recieve in addition to the amount already named, such amount as shall be equal to amount given to my other eigth children at time of their marriage and leaving home.
      The remainder of my personal property after using the same to pay muy just debts, I give and bequeath equally between all my children share and share alike.
      It is my will that the amount that I am now security for my son Albert or any part unpaid of same and that amount that may be unpaid of money secured by me on the note of Emmett Lyle shall be deducted from the share of said son Albert and Esther V Lyle my said daughter.
      I hereby nominate and appoint my son John M Coughenour executor of this my last will and testament, I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made.
      In testimony hereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 11th day of January AD 1897.

      Old Kyger Freewill Baptist Church - the land was given by David and the bricks pressed on his farm by his two sons, Al and Mel. The church was built in March 1, 1826 (first service?) In the 1860s the church was moved across the road from the hillside, over Old Kyger Creek and placed near the site of the present building.

      Hardesty's Gallia Co:
      David Coughenour - and Rachel McCarty were married in Cheshire, October 26, 1843. He was born in Augusta co, Virginia, August 6, 1820, and his wife in this township February 4, 1822. Their children , numbering eleven are as follows;

      The parents of Mr Coughenour were Christian and Margaret (Dice )Coughenour, who came to this county in 1830 from Augusta county, Virginia. His father died Jan 1, 1873, aged 87 years, and his mother, October 11, 1859, 67 years old. The parents of Mrs Coughenour are Jonas and Esther S McCarty, who came to this county in 1800 from Greenbrier county, VA. Her father died May 28, 1852, and her mother, who was born March 23, 1791, is stull living , in good health, in Cheshire township at the age of 91 years. Mr David Coughenour has accumulated a very pleasant and comfortable home, consisting of 140 acres of which thirty contain coal, the balance being principally bottom land. He is an earnest worker in the Baptist church. Besdies attending to his farm duties he is engaged in milling, and also in stock-raising. the date of his arrival in this county is 1830. His address is Cheshire, Gallia Co, OH.

      David Coughenour died at his home near Cheshire, Saturday, April 14, 1900. He was born in Augusta County, Va, Aug. 6, 1820. He came to Gallia Co. with his parents in 1830 and settled in Cheshire township,where he has always lived. He married Rachel McCarty in 1843. They were the parents of eleven children, two sons and nine daughters, all save two daughters surviving him. He had held,
      membership with the First Kyger F.W.B. Church since 1841. He was a man of great worth to the church and community. His funeral was held Monday morning at the church, services conducted by Rev. W.J. Fulton of Rio Grande, which was largely attended.
