Mrs. Mary Jane Sheppard, mother of J.I. Sheppard, died at the home of her son on South Crawford street, at about 3:30 o'clock this morning, after an illness of six weeks. Mrs. Sheppard came here last September from her home in California to visit her son during the winter. She has been quite sick for several weeks and the last few days it had been known she could not survive.
The funeral will be held from the Sheppard home Monday morning at 10 o'clock. The service will be conducted by Rev. Fulcher. Mrs. Sheppard having been a member of the Presbyterian church for many years.
Mary Jane Ingraham was born in Jackson county, West Virginia in 1832. She was married in 1851 to Samuel H. Sheppard. They came to Bourbon county in 1870 and lived for many years on a farm near Godfrey, south of Fort Scott. Four children, two sons and two daughters were born to them, the daughters having died. The surviving sons are J.I. of this city and James of Santa Rosa, Calif. In 1885 the family moved to Idaho, only the son, J.I. remaining here. The husband and father died in Idaho in the winter of 1885 and the family then moved to California where they have since lived.
