      History of Meigs county:
      Jonathan Pulllin

Jonathan Pullin, the second son of Loftus and Mary Smith Pullin, married Lydia Simpson on January 7, 1833. The marriage was performed by Justice of the Peace J.C. Hysell in Chester Township.
The Pullins "clan" grew and prospered in Chester Township. However, some time after 1850, Jonathan and Lydia, his wife, left their relatives and moved northeast to Olive Township. Jonathan had probably been named after his great-uncle who remained in Mason County, Virginia. Lydia had lived in Rutland Township before marrying. Her great-grandfather, Andrew Simpson, was of Scotch-Irish descent and lived in northern Ireland.
In 1725 he sailed to Boston and later moved to Nottingham, New Hampshire. . .

      Loftus Pullin

In 1815 Loftus and John Pullin and their families crossed the river from Mason County, Virginia, into Meigs County, Ohio. The two brothers had originally moved to Mason County with their uncle, Jonathan Pullin, in 1811, having migrated from their native Bath County, Virginia.
For unknown reasons, Jonathan and his family remained in Mason County and most, if not all of the people now living there with surnames of either Pullin or Pullins, descend from him.
Loftus had been named after their grandfather, Loftus Pullin (1720-1801). Their grandfather had been a pioneer settler of Augusta County, Virginia, having arrived there in 1745. His farm had included over 800 acres. He was one of the largest slave owners in the area and an Indian fighter. He also served in the French and Indian War in 1763 with Captain William Preston's Company of Rangers.
John had been named after their father, John Pullin (1751-1806). Their father had spent his entire life on the Pullin farm. It is believed he served in the Revolutionary War.
The two brothers originally settled somewhere in Sutton Township. Then, sometime, between 1820 and 1830, they moved to Chester Township and settled in the area that eventually became the small village of Echo. . .

It is believed they are buried in the cemetery at Success Church, although there are no grave stones. It is also believed their son Harrison is buried there.
