Elva J. Gandee
Elva Jane Casto Gandee passed away June 3, 2007.
Elva Jane was born Feb. 2, 1909, in the kitchen of the little white house on the family farm in Belgrove, W.Va. She was the youngest child of the late John Raleigh Casto and the late Louisiana Good Casto.
Elva Jane married William Otho Gandee on March 9, 1925. They eloped, traveling by horseback, train and ferry boat to Pomeroy, Ohio, to be married. Otho and Elva resided in Jackson County their entire lives, raising four children, a son, Carroll, and three daughters, Glennis, Naomi and Charlene. Elva was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing big Sunday dinners for her family. She was an accomplished seamstress and could make her own patterns. She gardened, canned and made many beautiful quilts. In her younger days, she planed an old time organ, singing as she played. Elva was a member of the Independence Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Otho; daughter, Glennis; sons-in-law, Robert Shepherd and Audis McCrady; brothers, Denver Allen Casto, Mattie Odell Casto, Roscoe Casto, Luster Casto and Ray Casto; two sisters, Dessie (Tommy) Randolph and Ora (Brady) Randolph.
She is survived by three children, Carroll (Ruby Jean Fields) Gandee of Ravenswood, Naomi (Audis McCrady) of Sandyviille and Charlene (Robert) Balis of Sandyville. She had eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
A precious one from us has gone. A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our home. That never can be filled.
She enjoyed and was a wonderful grandma to her eight grandchildren, Sharon (David) Mueller of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Durwood (Ginny) Gandee and Jill (Jimmy) Youell of Ravenswood, Gary Shepherd, Phillip (Sandy) Shepherd and Pamela (Jim) Lewis of Sandyville, Linda Ross of Ripley and Robin (Gary) Sheppard of Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Sara Mueller Miranda of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jane Bova of Wallingford, Conn., Jennifer Gannon of Middletown, Md., Dr. Jason Shepherd of Morgantown, W.Va., Stacy McFall of Robson, W.Va., Alicia Gandee of Seymour, Tenn., Ashley Gandee of Ripley, Cody and Taylor Youell of Ravenswood, Jessica Spears, Megan Ohse and Mallory Ohse, all of Sandyville, Jonathan and Kelsey Triplett of Elizabeth; stepgreat-grandchildren, Tonya Jones and Danielle Hopkins of Sandyville, Christopher, Joshua and Adam Lewis of Parkersburg and Tyler Sheppard of Elizabeth; great-great-grandchildren, Jesse Ray, Jarrett and Emilee McFall of Robson, Emma Jane and Adam Bova of Wallingford, Conn., Ann Marie and Caroline Gannon of Middletown, Md., and Hunter Spears of Sandyville; and stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Madison Jones of Sandyville.
