Mrs. Mariah A. Casto, one of Jackson county's most highly esteemed ladies, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Caroline Little, near Rockcastle, February 5, 1916, where she had been the pleasant guest for two short weeks.
Deceased was the daughter of William and Louisa Morrison, was born in Braxton county, June 13, 1829, being 86 years 7 months and 22 days old at the time her death.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Casto, July 1849. To this union were born ten children. Surviving are the following: F.M. Casto, of Charleston; Mrs. A. A. Parsons, of Leon; W.R. Casto, of Rockcastle; Mrs. Caroline Little, of Rockcastle; J.G. Casto, of Pocataligo (sic), J.M. Casto, of Leon; and B.G. Casto, of Fairplain, all of whom attended the funeral except F.M. Casto, who has been ill at his home for some time. She is also survived by one brother, Mr. Granville Morrison, of Huntington. Husband and three children have preceded her to the Glory Land.
She was converted at the age of 12 years, joined the U.B. church and lived a constant and devoted Christian 74 years until death.
Grandmother, as she was affectionately called, had been making her home among her children since the death of her husband 4 years ago, having spent the early winter with her daughter, Mrs. A.A. Parsons, and son, J.M Casto of Leon. She was accompanied to the home of Mrs. Little on January 21, by her son, J.M., and grand daughter, Miss Dorothy, only being there a few days, until she became seriously ill, and medical aid and tender nursing were of no avail and on the morning of February 5, children lost mother, earth's sweetest blessing and Heaven's richest gift.
Grandmother's kind and loving disposition, her pleasant smile and tender voice was welcome in every home. The community has lost a good neighbor, the church a devoted member, but grandmother has joined a Christian home above.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Haught. Undertaker Moore had charge of the remains. The pallbearers were six of her grandsons, Floyd and Bert Little, of Red House, Loyd Casto, of Leon, Rev. Willie Casto, of Pocataligo and Talmage and Dayton Casto, of Rockcastle. The remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the Mt. Olive cemetery, Sunday, February 6, 1916.
