      Irene Read:
William and Caroline (Barnhouse) Starcher lived in Calhoun County, WV their entire lives. According to family tradition, Caroline was a descendant of the Cherokee Indian Tribe. It is not known if it is from the Barnhouse or Burnside family. Caroline lived with her children the last years of her life, thus being able to know and be loved by all of her 81 grandchildren.
William's uncle, Jesse Starcher, was hunting with his brothers. He wounded a bear which came in pursuit of him. As he tried to escape, he stumbled over a log and before his brothers could come to his rescue, the bear ate the flesh and the muscle structure from the back of his legs. This made him a cripple and he had to walk with two canes the rest of his life. He is buried in the Wayne Cemetery, Beech.

William was taken prisoner during the Civil War and was taken to Andersonville, Georgia prison. When he arrived there, a guard on duty recognized him and let him return to his family.
