Obituary of Thomas Harper-May 17, 1900
OBITUARY
Thomas Harper was born near Belfast, Ireland, October 4, 1824, and came to
America when a boy, locating in New York. From there he removed to Staten
Island where he became aquainted with MARGARET J. FERGUSON whom he married in
April, 1847, at Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and with whom he lived a happy
married life for fifty-three years.
>From Rhode Island Mr. Harper removed to Passaic, New Jersey, thence in 1848
to Falls in Schuylkill, Pennsylvania. In 1855 he went to Jackson county, West
Virginia, where he lived until 1875, encountering all the vicissitudes
incident to that country during the war. In July, 1862, he was taken prisoner
by the rebels, leaving his wife with six children, the youngest of whom were
twin babes a few weeks old. He was detained in prison for four months and
suffered much in every way, and during the same time and during the remainder
of that war lost much of his property. In 1875
Mr. Harper determined to remove to the west and went to Illinois, and from
there came to Kansas in 1878, settling on a farm south of Vermillion.
Retiring from active life, he spent the last ten years in the town of
Vermillion, where his death occurred on the morning of May 10, 1900.
Mr. Harper was the father of ten children, one was buried in Philadelphia,
three in Virginia, one in Frankfort (Kansas), where the subject of this
notice was interred May 11th.
Five children survive to comfort and cheer the aged mother - Mrs. MARTHA
E. HUFF, JOHN F. HARPER, Mrs. MAGGIE M. SCHAFER, Mrs. ISABEL C. OLIVER and THOMAS L. HARPER.
In 1897 Mr. and Mrs. Harper celebrated their golden wedding with their
family and many friends in Vermillion. Mr. Harper was the possessor of a fine
memory, the events of life and history he recalled and related with vivid
clearness. He was a man universally respected and beloved, and passes on to
the life immortal, like a shock of corn fully ripe.
