The condition of the above Obligation is such, that whereas there is a Marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between said Reuben Reynolds and Jean Tanner who is upwards of twenty one years old now if there be no lawful cause to object the said Marriage,

Pg. 284, Bishop's History of Roane Co. Thomas Reynolds and his wife, Lucinda (Tolly) Reynolds, were among the oldest of the pioneer settlers on lower Spring Creek; Thomas was a son of Ruben Reynolds, of Rockbridge Co., VA, a soldier of the War of 1812. Thomas Reynolds left two sons, William Lane Reynolds and F. Asbury Holt Reynolds. William L. married Emily D., daughter of Joshua and Samantha (Miller) Runnion; of this union one son yet surviving is Joshua Thomas Reynolds, of the City of Spencer, now serving as office deputy of Walter A. Carpenter, the sheriff of the county.
Pg. 313- The Rev. Ruben Reynolds came in 1826, from where or of what sect is not given us. The same year came the Rev. P. Hall, a Methodist minister. These are recorded as preaching "in the wilderness;" but not until 1833, was a religious society organized. That year, Mathew Matties, a Baptist preacher, organized a congregation of Baptist worshippers, at Presley Vineyard's near the mouth of Johnson Creek. (Presley Vineyard was my 3rd g-grandfather.)
Pg.458- Elizabeth Ann, daughter of Joshua and Elvilda, married William Whetzel Short, of Spencer District. Rebecca Viola of this first family was thrice married; first two husbands died, her last being Ruben Reynolds, of Spencer District.

Reynolds Family [a portion of the sketch]

The founder of the Reynolds family was Reuben Reynolds, who came from Botetourt county, Virginia, and settled on Poca River, Walton District, Roane County. His wife was Virginia (maiden name not learned). Their children were:

Thomas Reynolds, son of Reuben, married Lucinda Tolley. They lived on Tug Fork. They had a son, W.L. Reynolds, born in 1841, he married Emily D Miller, daughter of Joshua and Samantha Runyan Miller, William L Reynolds was in Company B, Ninth West Virginia Infantry.

William Reynolds, son of Reuben, married Mary Wolfe, a daughter of Jonathan Wolfe. Their daughter married Bazil Wright.

Sarah Reynolds, daughter of Reuben, married Ferdinand Sallaz, a Swiss Frenchman.

Nancy Reynolds, daughter of Reuben, married a Wood.

Elizabeth Reynolds, daughter of Reuben, married John Casto, son of William Casto, and later she married R.S. Deweese.

      Vincent Reynolds, married Isabel Wright.

John Reynolds was born in 1827 and died in 1891. (Wife's name not learned.) James Reynolds, their son, married Angeline Skidmore. A.C. (Taylor) Reynolds was their son.

      Reynolds Family

Ben Reynolds (Runnells) lived in 1838 in the old house on the Hugh Kyger place, which stood where the dwelling house and post office now stand. He had probably built it.

About the same time, William Reynolds (Bill Runnells) lived in the John Casto house, which stood out in the bottom a little way on the right hand side of the mouth of Bear Tree Run.

William Reynolds married Mary Wolfe, who was a daughter of Jonathan Wolfe. J.M. Reynolds, who lived on Grass Lick, was their son. **

A sister of William and Ben married John Casto, who was killed at a log rolling below Reedyville.

      Thomas Reynolds married Lucinda Tolley.

All four of these were children of Reuben Reynolds, who came from Bottetourt County, Virginia, though he may have lived at other places also. Ben was the eldest son. (Someone else said that Casto's wife was a Rollins.)
      [** JM (James M) was William's brother. . .bb]
