History of the Doyle Homestead
Copied from the Parkersburg News
Dated March 8, 1931
Came here by flat boat to make a home Andrew Van Lear floated down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh on flatboat.
How did your family come to Parkersburg to take up their residence? By train, automobile, airplane or boat? Or was it by covered wagon. River packet or on horseback?
Here is a story of a Parkersburg family whose ancestors came to this locality by flatboat, who cleared his land granted him by the government, built his cabin in a wilderness, wooed and won a bride from Belpre, followed the trade of a carpenter and was the builder of the first court house in this vicinity.
It is the story of Andrew Van Lear, great-grandfather of Miss Kathryn G. Haley, of 824 Avery St. Miss Haley tells the story as follows:
Early in 1792, my great-grandfather, Andrew Van Lear, left the settlements in Pennsylvania and floated down the Ohio River on a flatboat, landing at Belpre, Ohio. He carried in an inside pocket, carefully wrapped in oilskin, a grant from the United States Government of several acres of land, for he had been a soldier of the Revolutionary War.
After visiting a few days in Belpre, where he met his future bride, he crossed the river and struck off into the wilderness to take up his land. He settled several miles inland from the Ohio River and a mile and a half from what is now the city of Parkersburg ,
( W.Va.) but was then a mere trading post, later called The Point. Here after many weary weeks of felling trees and hewing logs, he erected his log cabin. Later the road to Lubeck went directly through his land, divided it, and left his cabin standing on a slight elevation above the land.
His cabin now built, no doubt the Biblical injunction it is not good for man to live alone, occurred to him, and he returned to Belpre seeking the lovely maid who had smiled upon him there. He wooed and won the winsome lassie. She was Mary Gandee, sister of Uriah Gandee, who married Massie Hughes, daughter of Jesaih Hughes, the celebrated Indian scout for whom Hughes River was named.
After their wedding in Belpre, Andrew and Mary Van Lear returned to his clearing in the wilderness and settled down to the hardships of the pioneer man and woman, rearing a family and gleaning a living from the primitive conditions.
Andrew, when not working on his land, added to his earnings by following his trade as a carpenter. He built the cabin at The Point with logs from his land, that was used as a courthouse. He also built the barns on the island for Harmon Blennerhassett. It was a hard trip daily through the primeval forest from his place on Lubeck road to the island where the barns were built. Blennerhassett, I regret to say , was poor pay and Andrew Van Lear was forced to bring suit against him to collect his money. The suit was instituted in the Fall of 1799 and dragged through court , being put off from time to time by the wealthy and influential Blennerhassett, until 1802, when Van Lear was successful in winning the case. Blennerhassett appealed to the highest court in Virginia, where the case was settled by the higher court sustaining the decision of the lower court in favor of Van Lear.
It will readily be seen that Andrew Van Lear had no little courage in instituting suit against Harmon Blennerhassett, reputed to be the wealthiest man of his time in the community, and it was no small victory to have gained his suit.
In 1832, Andrew replaced his log cabin with a commodius farm house with a Dutch chimney built of stone, where in the capacious fireplace huge logs were burned and beefs roasted.
He and his wife Mary reared a large family, the youngest of whom was my grandmother, Sallie Van Lear. She married Michael Doyle, who came from County Leitrim, Ireland in 1832. They were married in the Van Lear farm house in 1839. The wedding took place in mid-winter; the ground was covered with a deep snow and the folks of the countryside came for miles in their sleighs to attend the wedding, for Sallie was a general favorite. The bridal trip was a sleigh ride around the hill, which is now called Fort Boreman, accompanied by a merry crowd of young folks.
Michael Doyle and his brother James, who came with him from Ireland, were the first Catholics in this section. Sallie Van Lears parents were Methodist.
The above mentioned farm house, built in 1832, is still standing on Lubeck Avenue, although the stone chimney has long since been removed to make way for more modern facilities. It will be 100 years old in 1932. It is known as the old Doyle place and is occupied by the family of John Andrew Doyle, grandson of the original owner, Andrew Van Lear. Just across the avenue, on land which is a part of the original grant, stands the home of Mrs. Sarah Jane ( Doyle ) Rau, and is now occupied by her son Edward Rau, great-grandson of Andrew Van Lear.
Andrew and Mary Van Lear are buried in tavennerville cemetery. Michael and Sallie Doyle are buried in the Catholic cemetery at 15th street. Requiescent in pace.
Footnote** the original farm house was destroyed by fire in early 1962.
Sincerely, Michael R Doyle
