The History of Harper District by M. A. C. Hopkins
The Cobb: Hughet Cobb, was born in Kanawha County in 1800. His wife's maiden name was Nancy Ashley, born in the year 1801. They were early settlers in Harper District, making their home on what is now call the Martin Smith farm on Higly Creek. Mr. Cobb was a cooper by trade and a farmer. To him and his wife Nancy, were born fourteen children, seven sons and seven daughters. The names of the sons were Zachariah T., John A., Madison, Hiram, Hildavart, Wiley and Scott. Five of the son were in the Federal Army. We do not remember the names of the daughters.

Five brothers of Z. T. Cobb were Federal soldiers; John A. served three years in Company C, 8th Virginia Infantry; Madison about three years in Company RF, 9th Virginia, J. Hiram, W. Wiley and Hildavert were in the same company; J. Hiram was wounded at Winchester, and is a pensioner; Hildavert is also a pensioner, having nearly lost his sight in the service.
