From the Jackson County Message Board:
From what was given to me, the immigrant Hill ancestor came from England but of the earliest ancestor we know, Jonathan Hill, was regarded as “Scotch-Irish.” I was told that he was born in Connecticut about 1778. Jonathan married about 1800 Roxey Ann Warner who was born about 1781. Some time after that the family moved to Rhode Island, then on to Rutland, New York. Some researchers spell her name, “Roxanna,” and other variations. Some of their children were born in Rhode Island and New York. Sometime after 1810, Jonathan Hill brought his family to northern Virginia. About 1815 they came on down the Ohio River to Pt. Pleasant and in time followed the Kanawha River upstream to what is now Putnam County. There were about 10 children born to Jonathan and Roxey Hill.
Some of the family left WV for Iowa. Jonathan reportedly died on the trek to Iowa. I was told that the younger son settled in a place called Eddyville (or something like that), Iowa.
