From Austin Hinkle:
They had five sons who were known locally as the house of giants as the five boys averaged 240 pounds. Their names: Albert "Ned", Austin B., Clarence "Chink", Beecher, and Lewis "Lee"
Austin B. was on the aircraft carrier,"Bunker Hill" during WWII when it got hit by torpedo and suiside bombers. Austin was in the engine room at the time of the attack. the compartment doors were locked and he spent three days in total darkness, in water to his waist. He was the only person to come out of the engine room alive. The air was so smoky from burning aircraft fuel that they could hardly breathe. Air was in such short supply that he would not even answer the commands from above, but just go and do what was needed. Time after time they would swing the ship around to wash the burning fuel overboard. Finally when there was only two of them left, the said that there was only a three inch hole that they could breathe through and the other fellow would not share it with me, but I knew where there was a large wrench. He would never say more than that about it. When they finally brought them out, Austin was laid out with the dead, but regained conciousness. He was offered a purple heart but refused it, said that he just wanted to go home. He never married and lived the rest of his life in the same home with his mother, father, and brother Lewis.
Albert lived in a little house about a quarter mile up the mountain road. He married, Wilma Short. They had two sons James, born about 1935. I think that he is still living in Richwood, and Austin B. born about 1942, also living in Richwood. Albert's wife died about 1951 at home with Cancer.
Clarence"Chink" was a school teacher and Coach in Cowen, WV. I don't know much about his family.
Beecher married a woman that went by Johnie. Don't know her last name. Beecher was a school teacher in the Nicholas County system. I read an article in the newspaper about him that said he had taught for thirty years and never missed a day or never was late. Beecher held the Golden Golves for WV when he was in school, and had, I believe two Master's degrees. He never had any children but loved them. He always had one or two around who usually were children with problems. He would just take them in and teach them until he got them straightened out. He was the family historian. He wrote many articles on the Hinkle family that were published in the Richwood Newspapers "The Hill Billy and News Leader" I believe that My brother has most of those articles and when I get back to the US in May, I will get them. I wrote Beecher just before he died, at 91, and sent him a FEDEX number to ship what he had to me which he was going to do but died before he could get it done.
Lewis "Lee" was the youngest, was in the Korean War, never married. He was invited to the University of WV to play football which he started to do but because of his drinking problem they soon sent him home. He and Austin lived out their days in the same home that their parents had had. Albert, Austin, and Lewis drank a lot. I don't think that Clarence ever drank and I know that Beecher never even tasted it.
