Mabel (Jones) Hatcher, 93, of the Tug Fork community, Ripley, WV, passed away February 14, 2017 at Ravenswood Care Center in Ravenswood, WV, following a long illness with Alzheimer’s.
She was born September 21, 1923, in Vicars, Roane County, WV, a daughter of the late George and Bertha (Gandee) Jones.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Wayne. Three sisters, Roxie Scarbrough, Violet Schoolcraft, Mae Jones and one brother, Orville Jones also preceded her in death.
Mabel was a homemaker who dedicated her life to family and church. During WWII, she lived and worked in Akron, Ohio where she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter”. She later worked for two years as a cook at the Cedar Lakes dining hall.
Mabel and Wayne were married in 1945 at the Akron Baptist Temple and soon returned to their roots in WV settling on Tug Fork where they raised their family. She was a longtime member of the Salt Hill Community Church. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and often a caregiver to her extended family members.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Steve and Melissa Hatcher of Ripley; daughters and sons-in-law, Vera M. and Thornton Smith of Parkersburg, and Velma “Mackie” and Tom Goodson of Ripley; grandchildren, Lisa and (Kelly) Snyder of Ripley, Lori and (Jeff) Renner of Arvilla, Lynn and (Dave) Allen of Bear, DE, Tommy and (Bri) Goodson of Ravenswood, Whitney and (Marc) Scholl of Given, Kendra and (Brandon) Hersman of Lubeck, Chris and (Caroline) Smith of Taylorsville, NC, Dave and (Jodi) Smith of Rockport, and Phil and (Molly) Smith of Parkersburg. Survivors also include 21 great grandchildren.
Service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, February 17, 2017, at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Evans, WV, with Pastor David Fields officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairplain Cemetery, Ripley. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the Salt Hill Community Church c/o Patty Hall, 66 Juniper Grove Drive, Cottageville, WV, 25239. The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to the owners and staff of the Ravenswood Care Center for the love and care shown to Mabel.
