  Notes	John Alexander Shinn, known to his thousands of friends as J. A. is dead and the curtain has rung down on one of the colorful careeers in the history of Jackson County. Death came to the 78 year old member of the County Court at his Ripley home last Thursday evening about 9:30 o'clock and was a shock to the citizens of the County, many of whom had not learned that he had been for four days fighting valiantly but fighting a losing battle against a heart ailment which developed Sunday. He was Sheriff of the county from 1917 to 1921. Previously to that time he had been deputy sheriff and after his term of sheriff had expired was named a member of the Board of Education of Ripley independent district and in 1934 was elected to membership on the county court and was elected for another 6 years term last fall. He was a son of George W. and Elizabeth (Stone) Shinn, was born at McDermott's Mill, Mason County, on Dec. 11, 1862, died on July 10, 1941 Ripley, age 78 years, 6 months and twenty days. When only two years of age he moved to Fairplain with his parents who settled on the farm which he owned at the time of his death. On March 29, 1883 he married Miss Dora Catherine Skidmore, daughter of A. A. and Madaline Skidmore and to this union seven children were born. Three of the children died in infancy. He is survived by the widow and four children, Mrs Georgia Ellison of Ripley, Mrs. J. Howard Smith of Ripley, Allen Shinn of Ripley and Doctor John Shinn Jr. of Pt. Pleasant, one brother, J.O. Shinn of Pt. Pleasant, and a sister, Mrs A. A. Reynolds, of Evans. The funeral services were held at the Ripley United Brethren Church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. L. R. Mahoney in charge of the service and the body was taken to Shinn cemetery at Fairplain for burial. [JCDR indicates he would have been born 11 Nov 1862]
