    • Robert Hutchinson Cole, 91, of Ravenswood, WV, departed this life on February 15, 2006, at his home.

      Mr. Cole was born on November 29, 1914, in Ravenswood, son of the late D. E. and Cora Hutchinson Cole. Mr. Cole was a lifelong resident of Ravenswood, where he co-founded, owned and operated J Co Lumber. He was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church in Ravenswood; a member of the Ravenswood Lions Club, and a former Board Member of Jackson General Hospital. He was an avid fan and supporter of the Ravenswood Red Devils and the West Virginia University Mountaineers, and master bridge player (just ask anybody).

      During his business career, he served in various civic and philanthropic organizations, and in the early fifties, Mr. Cole helped found the 14 Club. After college graduation, he lived and worked on the family farm in Leroy, WV, for four years before he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as a Second Lieutenant during World War II and the Korean War.





      Surviving are his daughters, Jan Pickens, Mt. Pleasant, SC; Nancy Willams-Berry and her husband Kent, Lexington, KY; and Peg Brooks and her husband Tom, Charleston, SC; son, Bill Cole and his wife Rosemary, Ravenswood; grandchildren, Amy (Bebe) Pickens, Cary, NC; Amanda (Pinky) Williams Shampine, Charlotte, NC; T.C. (Teco) Williams, Baltimore, MD; Sean (Bingo) Brooks and Melanie (Tinker) Brooks, both of Charleston, SC; Lauren (Corky) Cole and Alex (Jumper) Cole, both of Ravenswood; great granddaughter, Hannah (Rosie) Shampine, Charlotte, NC.

      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Newbury Cole; sister, Wannie Purdy; granddaughters, Emily (Boomer) Pickens and Melissa Brooks.

      In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, 215 Ann Street, Ravenswood, WV 26164.

      Services were held on Sunday, February 19, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Ravenswood, with Reverend John Villers officiating. Interment followed in Ravenswood Cemetery. Friends visited the family at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, on Saturday, February 18, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
