She was born in September 16, 1920, daughter of the late Elbert and Orva Rawlings Crane. A lifelong homemaker, Margaret was a member of the Eastern Star, Fairplain Homemakers and was a former Sunday school teacher at Fairplain Union Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James W. Smith and one brother, Golden Crane. Surviving: Son, Clifton B. Short (Linda) of Myrtle Beach, SC; Granddaughter, Stephani Vealey (Jeff), of Kenna; Grandson, Clifton J. Short of Ripley; Great-granddaughter, Chelsea Bundy of Ripley; Brother, Camden Crane (JoAnn) of Melbourne, FL. The family would like to thank caregivers Chelsea Bundy, Pauline Parsons and Judy Short with a special thanks to Jenny of Hospice and Kanawha Valley Senior Services for the compassion and care shown to Margaret during her illness. Funeral services are set for Monday, August 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Reverend Jim Compton officiating. Interment will follow at the Casto Cemetery, Fairplain. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations honoring Margarets memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Kanawha Hospice or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
