From Jackson County Past and Present 1990:
      Gilbert and Christine Hinzman Rhodes

Gilbert Warren and Christine Marie (Hinzman) Rhodes were my parents. Gilbert was born January 1, 1921 and Christine was born September 21, 1922 They were married April 2, 1939 at Lockport, WV at Reverend Cunningham’s house. Dad died July 20, 1984 and Mom died Oct 1, 1997. They had three children: Kathleen Joyce, Daniel Willie, and Judith (Judy). I am the only surviving child. As many of the Rhodes clan, they lived on a hilltop farm near my Uncle Benoni and Aunt Lora, and cousins Chalmer and Wilma lived at Allentown. They grew tobacco, which many of the pioneers of Jackson County grew. The Rhodes, Tolleys and Thomas’s, who emigrated from Virginia brought seeds with them to plant. Gilbert was a truck farmer for several years, growing strawberries, tomatoes, beans and onions for market. He later became a proud member of Laborer’s Local 1085 at Parkersburg. He worked on many dams on the Ohio River, Jackson County Library and Jackson General Hospital as well as Roane County Library and Roane General Hospital. My mom loved to garden, sew and cook. She and dad liked to fish and hunt, especially in the mountains, near my grandfather Rhodes’ camp on Red Creek.

My father was the only son of Willie and Beatrice (Tolley) Rhodes. Willie was the son of Gordon Meade Rhodes and Phoebe Tuttle. Willie was born November 23, 1898, and died April 22, 1968. He married Beatrice Tolley (Thomas) June 6, 1920 in Jackson County.

Beatrice was the daughter of William Howard Tolley and Agnes Jane Thomas. She was born April 28, 1900, and died March 12, 1999. She walked to Elk Fork Church for services from her house. She attended Sand Hill School, which was located in Tolley Hill, Gay, WV. She also walked to my parents’ home when my twins were born in1978. She liked to eat pickled beans and corn bread. Willie raised Herford cows and was a well tender for Eureka. He liked to go hunting in the mountains.

My maternal grandparents were Arthur and Virgie (Williams) Hinzman. They were married 9 January, 1915 in Jackson Co. Arthur was born February 10, 1895 and died October 7, 1967. He attended Beech Flat School near Gay. Arthur was the son of James Madison Hinzman and Shirlomith “Loma” Ayers. Virgie was born March 21, 1898 and died January 28, 1978. She attended Sciene Hill School. She was the daughter of Dan and Martha (Rhodes) Williams. Arthur was a teacher in one room schools, including, Mud Run, Science Hill, Rocky Hill, and Gay. Grandmother loved her chickens; she made wonderful salt pickles and apple pie. My grandparents had five children. Their first child was Flavil 1915-1921, Phyllis Leona Hinzman born in 1916, and married William E. Morris, in 1941, Christine Marie 1922-1997 married Gilbert Rhodes in 1939, Evelyn G. 1924-2004 married Eli Short and Lansing Wayne 1926-1995 married Ruby Mc Crady.
