Nicholas Linger, Sr
Birth: 1758, Germany
Death: 1827
Lewis County
West Virginia, USA
There are many stories as to how Nicholas arrived in the US, but the one we feel is nearer true follows. We believe that Nicholas had a brother, Thomas Linger. They may have been born in Erksdorf, Germany and surname may have been Lincker. Thomas was in the Hussein Army during the American Revolution, and Nicholas may have been a drummer in his regiment, however their are no documents to prove this. Some stories have Nicholas as a stowaway on the troop ship that his brother served on in 1776. It appears that both Nicholas and his brother were trying to get away from the stern laws of the German government and a very stern father. His brother may have served in the Revolutionary War in the 9th Virginia Regiment of continental Army, under Capt. John Blair and Capt. John Paulson about 12/1776. Laying aside family tradition we find that there were Linger and McNemar families in the Mifflin and York County area of Pennsylvania in the 1700's, but no proof linking them with Nicholas and Margaret McNemar Linger has been found. It is believed that Nicholas father was a hat maker. (bio by: Evelyn Linger Thorn)
