Owens J. Smith, 95, of Pomeroy, Ohio, passed away on December 30, 2006, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio.
Mr. Smith was born on December 3, 1911, in Ripley, WV, a son of the late Albert Lawrence Smith and Mindy Belle Hill Smith.
He was formerly employed by the Meigs County Board of Education as a school bus driver. He was a trustee for Bedford Township; carpenter with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America; Pomeroy Local 650; Lifetime member of the VFW and also Lifetime member of the American Legion of Rutland, Ohio; member of the IOOF(Oddfellows) in Pomeroy, Ohio, and the IOOF Grand Lodge of Ohio. He enjoyed the livestock markets, square dancing, hunting and fishing, and the outdoors. He also was employed with the B & O Railroad, and was a coal miner. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.
Surviving is his wife, Luretta M. Lockhart Smith, of the home; children, Ruth Ann Dunfee and her husband Randy, Coolville, Ohio; and Howard L. Lockhart and fiancee Mary Ann Poole, Pomeroy, Ohio; Ruthie Siber and her husband Glen, Parkersburg, WV; grandchildren, Howard L. Lockhart, Jr., and Holly and Hannah Dunfee; sisters, Mabel and Maxine; brother, Lowen; special niece, Jeanie Flanigan and her husband Don, Ravenswood, WV; special sister-in-law, Dorothy Weekley, Ravenswood, WV; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Ankrum Smith; son, Dale Lockhart; sister, Catherine, and a baby sister; brothers, Estel, Oley, Russell; and a brother-in-law, George Weekley.
Services were held on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, WV, with Reverend Gerald Sayre officiating. Burial followed in Ravenswood Cemetery, with graveside military rites provided by Ravenswood VFW 6669.
Friends visited the family at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 2, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., time of service.
