Oval B. "Joe" Hatcher, 86, of Vienna, died June 4, 2014, at the Camden Clark Medical Center.
He was born to Joseph and Esther Winter Hatcher, at home in Kenna, W.Va., on July 18, 1927.
He began his work life at an early age as a rural mail carrier. That was followed by time in the U.S. Army from Feb. 13, 1946 to Aug. 15, 1947. He then worked as an auto mechanic in Ripley, W.Va. at Skidmore Garage, and later for Matson King, owner of the Massey Ferguson dealership. He married Dorothy Litton on Aug. 15, 1951. At age 40, he was called into Christian Ministry. After completing studies at Duke University, he received a Local Pastor's License from the United Methodist Church. He served in the United Methodist Church for 29 years, retiring in 1997. He served the Ripley, Smithville, Clifton, Belleville, Glenville, and Ellenboro Circuits in West Virginia and Swanton Charge in Garrett County, Md.
He continued to serve after retirement whenever called upon. He was a chaplain at Camden Clark Medical Center, Holzer Hospital in Gallipolis, Ohio, and Marietta Memorial Hospital. He participated in a prison ministry at the Doddridge County Regional Correctional Facility. He also served as President of the Parkersburg District Retired Minister's Breakfast meeting until health problems caused his retirement. He was also a member of the Wayside United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Litton Hatcher; son, Joey B. Hatcher and wife Jodi Perras of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandson, Joseph M. Hatcher, also of Indianapolis; son-in-law, Jeffrey Reed of Vienna; granddaughter, Jennifer Reed of Vienna; two brothers, Joseph O. Hatcher of Parkersburg, and Ralph E. Hatcher of Barberton, Ohio; and one sister, Freeda Halstead of Ripley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Mark Allen Hatcher; one daughter, Carrie Lea Reed; and three brothers, Boyd, Uriah and Okey Hatcher.
His life was dedicated to his God and his life was lived accordingly.
Services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 7, at Wayside United Methodist Church, with Rev. Patrick Kerr and Rev. Barbara Rexroad officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, June 7, at Jackson Memorial Gardens in Cottageville, W.Va.
