Skeen, 90, of Lakeland died Dec. 3, 1999, at home. He was a native of Kentuck, W.Va., former auditor of the West Virginia Legislature, former owner of Skeen's Furniture and Appliance and Skeen's Grocery in Charleston and helped set up the Postal Service address system on Sissonville Drive, Charleston. He was a founder of the Coalition for the Homeless in Lakeland, a member of Common Cause, Lakeland, and People for Peaceful Democracy. He was a Baptist and a Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving: wife, Thelma Skeen; son, Melvin of Lakeland; daughters, Evelyn Chism of Tucson, Jane Skeen of Lakeland; sister, Ruth Bossie of Daytona; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at David-Russell Funeral Home, Lakeland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Good Shepherd Hospice of Mid Florida, P.O. Box 7129, Winter Haven, FL 33883, or to a charity of choice.
