- "Biographical & Historical Memoirs of Muskingum county, OH" (Chicago, Goodspeed pub. Co 1892) carries a sketch of the grandson of John Brown, William C. Tanner, in which it is said that Tanner's mother, Sarah Brown was of Irish descent. At the time of this publication Tanner was living and he in fact probably supplied the information about his mother's family. Since he was a grandson of John Brown and Waldo Brown was a great grandson and since it is known that Cumberland Co was home to a number of unrelated Brown families from Ireland, I have accepted the Tanner account of the family origin rather than that of Waldo Brown.
