From Richard: a Court document showing division of property:
We, Robert Irvine , John McKnight & William H Douthat, three of the commissioners appointed at the August Court of Botetourt County to make partition of the lands of Randolph Skidmore ded'd, amongst his heirs and to make report to Court, met on Tuesday the 21st September on the aforesaid lands, and after making a careful examination and survey of the same proceeded to lay of as the dower of Elenor Skidmore, widow of Randolph Skidmore dec'd, (altho not required by the order of the court to do so) that part of the farm on which the dwelling house stands represented on the annexed plat as ABCDA. Beginning at a Gum at A corner to the land lately purchased by ____ from Matthew Courton and with a line of the same S47 E 148 poles to a dead W Oak, thence a new line N34 E 50 poles to a White Oak corner to ____ Hill, thence with Hills line N31 W 128 to a White Oak, Hills corner on the River, thence up on the River 90 poles to the Beginning containing 60 acres. We also give to the dower the Ferry, which we consider of but little value.

The remainder of the old land ABEFGHIR 114 acres and IHGFLKI 50 acres, a part of the 100 acres ________ we divided into 9 parts as represented on the plat, as near of the same value as we could. The remainder of the 100 acre tract LMNOPFL about 60 acres, being so situated that it could not be attached to anyof the lots we proposed to _____________________- who own the land adjoining purchased of MW Houston, that they should take it at our valuation being of but little value to any one but themselves and the consented to take it and the value thereof divided between lots Nos 5, 6, 7, & 8. Robert Irvine & John McKnight who were well acquainted with the land determined its value at $20 (Twenty dollars) and that amount is to be paid to the owners of lots 6, 7, 8, &5, that is $5 each.

The above named John McKnight who acted with the undersighned in making the partition & so forth in the foregoing report having departed this life without signing the report, they as the survivors are under the necesity of signing and returning it without being sarisfied with the partition ____?___ assured the posesion and ownership of hte ?????? allotted to them as set forth above, and the ??????? and recording of the report and paltt are now only necessary as a means of indicating the different shaves and the metes and bounds thereof.
