Tony E. Alvis
Tony E. Alvis, 89, of Spencer passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born April 6, 1918, in Roane County, W.Va., a son of the late James H. and Rosa Phillips Alvis. He was retired from Eureka Pipeline Co. and formerly worked in the oilfields and for Tom Arnott and Paul Weekley. He was a farmer, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and attended several Roane County churches.
He is survived by his wife, Goldie Maxine Greathouse Alvis; two daughters, Carolyn Emogene Callow and her husband, George, of Reedy, W.Va., and Evelyn Gordie Goodwin of Spencer; three grandchildren, Timothy Callow of Reedy, Christy Shouldis and her husband, Dave, of Harmony, W.Va., and Eddie Goodwin Jr. of Spencer; two great-grandchildren, Lucas Keith Shouldis and Dawson Lee Shouldis; and one sister, Julia Ray of Grantsville.
In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by one son, James Earl Alvis; seven brothers, Carl, Charles, Walter, Frank and Calvin Alvis and two infants; two sisters, Eleanor Nester and Delma Greathouse; and a son-in-law, Edward Goodwin Sr.
Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Reverends Leon Strickland and John Lowe officiating. Burial will be in the Spencer Memorial Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by several Roane County veterans groups. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
