According to an article by Norse Angus in "Jackson County Past & Present":
Mathias Benson moved from PA to Highland Co, VA in 1787. An assessment of his estate in 1794 showed he was a slave owner and had a still valued at $48.
Mathias had two sons, Mathias and James. James married Margaret, the daughter of James Trimble who came to America from Scotland to fight for the British during the Revolutionary War. After the war, he lived in Highland Co, VA. James and Margaret moved to Doddridge County to raise their family.
During the Civil War, the family was split as Calvin fought for the Union and William and Wade Hampton fought for the South.
