Gerald G. Sayre
(March 26, 1916 - December 25, 2008)
Gerald G. Sayre, 92, of Robertsburg passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2008 at the home of his daughter after an extended illness
Gerald was born on March 26, 1916 to Perry and Ida Rairden Sayre of Arbuckle. He is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Elizabeth Sayre; his sister Irene Sayre; his brothers P.A. Sayre and Ernest Sayre; and his son-in-law Roger Young.
Gerald was retired from Arbuckle Tractor Sales and was a lifelong farmer. He was a lifelong member of the Leon Baptist Church and was regular member of the Buffalo Senior Citizens who helped him celebrate his 92nd birthday last March.
Gerald served as a medic in the United States Army's 101st Airborne Glider Division during World War II, having been part of the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He was captured at the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne and spent six months in a German prison camp. He was awarded the Bronze Star for rescuing two English soldiers on the Arnhem Bridge, as well as being awarded a Good Conduct medal.
Gerald is survived by his daughter Janie Campell and her husband French of Murrells Inlet, SC; his daughter Carolyn Young of Pinch; his son, John Scott Sayre and his wife Susan of Gallipolis, OH; sister, Mary Agnes Upton of Teays Valley; his granddaughters Melissa Fralick of Alpharetta, GA; Suzanne Young of Pinch; Sarah Harless of Pinch; Katie Boggs of Daniels; and Brittany Sayre of Gallipolis, OH. Gerald was also blessed with four great-grandchildren; Hannah Fralick, Allen Fralick, Tatum Young and Abigail Harless.
Gerald was most known for his kind and compassionate personality and his great sense of humor. He was always there to help his neighbors and was well known throughout Mason County for his ability to repair anything. Individuals called on him to fix anything from their tractor to their furnace and he was always happy to do so. Gerald was very proud to serve his country, but was most proud of his family who loved him dearly and will miss him greatly.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday December 29, 2008 at the Leon Baptist Church, Leon with Pastor Basil Hudson and Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Memorial Park, Buffalo. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo and one hour prior to the service at the church.
