Jack Gordon Burnette, 82, of Scott Depot went home to be with his Lord September 19, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.
Born September 26, 1925, in St. Albans, he was a son of the late Frank Gordon and Bessie Blanche Casto Burnett. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jack Gordon Burnette II; his sisters, Ruth Bartlett and Naoma Burnette; and his brothers, Paul Burnette and Joe Burnette.
Jack moved to Elk Run, Whitesville, in 1931 and attended Whitesville Junior High School and Sherman High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy March 8, 1942, and attended boot camp in Norfolk, Va. Following boot camp, he boarded the newly commissioned USS Indiana in Newport News, Va., and after a shake-down cruise to Portland, Maine, the ship was sent to the Pacific Theatre where they were awarded 12 battle stars from Guadalcanal to Tokyo Bay, Japan. He was discharged at Bainsbridge, Md., in 1945. Jack married Dorothy Arlene Gulley November 25, 1944, while home on leave.
He attended Morris Harvey College and worked for Kroger and the C&O Railroad for 7½ years. He retired December 30, 1980, following 27 years of service from the United States Postal Service as postmaster serving Whitesville. He served as president of the Whitesville Lions Club and assistant fire chief and ambulance manager for the Whitesville Emergency Medical Services. He was a member of the Boone Masonic Lodge 162 AF&AM, Whitesville, and was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Whitesville, Pettus Baptist Church and Judson Baptist Church. He currently was a member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene, where he served as a trustee of the church board.
In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his daughters, Beverly Ann Viars of Comfort, Karen Ruth Kidd of Apopka, Fla., Sharon Rose Newbold of Nags Head, N.C., and Susan Jean Clay of Vero Beach, Fla.; his grandchildren, C.W. Viars, Angela Wall, Jack Viars, Chris Kidd, Brandon Kidd, Andrew MacBlane and Morgan Elizabeth Clay; and eight great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, September 21, at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene, Hurricane, with Pastor Charles V. Williams, the Rev. Fred McCallister and the Rev. Bill Bartlett officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
