[strange that he is not buried in the Rector cemetery on the hill above his house. . . bb] ~ Buried in Dewitt Cemetery at Muses Bottom, near Murraysville, WV ~ Washington's Woods by Dean W Moore pages 58-59 As a result of their notoriety across the river, the Sherman family became known in the late 1700s and early 1800s on the Virginia side of the river. The father, Able Sherman, a cousin of General William Tecumseh Sherman, lived in Ohio and sold white settler scalps for fifty dollars each to the British. One day Abel heard the death bells of some missing cows and went out of his cabin to investigate. The Indians attacked him and he was later buried at a place now called Dead Man's Run. Four years after the death of Abel , a strange twist of fate occurred. A half-breed Indian named Silverheels was drinking whiskey at Big Bottom with some white men and bragged of having seventeen white scalps. In addition he told of a gun he hid in a log and its location. One of the men present was Ezra Sherman, oldest son of Abel, who went to the location and found his father's gun. Several men then chased Silverheels, and three men tricked him into getting caught. One of the three men was Nathaniel Chapman, a half brother of Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman). In the early 1800s Isaac Baldwin Sherman moved to (West) Virginia with his wife Nancy Elizabeth Dewitt. He owned three thousand acres of land in Jackson County and became sheriff of the county. Isaac is buried at Muses Bottom, West Virginia. Isaac's daughter, Sarah Baldwin Sherman, had a son William Lafayette Rector by her husband Levin Ludwell Rector. (The first Post office in Lebanon twp, Meigs county, was located at Sterling Bottom, about 3/4 mile north of the present village of Portland) Family grown when he came to VA. (I assume this indicates that the author of this article Ernestine Price of Portland, believed Isaac was the son of Abel - bb)
