  Notes	Charles enrolled on October 13, 1862 into Company B, Ninth Infantry Regiment, West Virginia Volunteers. He was honorably discharged at Cumberlain, Maryland on July 21, 1865. At age 53 he is described as follows: height 5'11; complexion dark; hair black; eyes grey. The following our excerpts from reports in his pension file: General affidavit February 23, 1881; Charles Drake age 55, "first he recieved rupture in Hardy County WVa in November 1862 second he recieved dislocation of his left ankle in Lewis County WVa in May 1863 third he recieved injury to his eyes by exposure in the service in the years 1862-3-4-5. Declaraion for invalid pension January 3, 1898; Charles Drake age 72, "...he is now unable to earn support by reason of age and crippled in right hand." Proof of disabilty dated March 6, 1883 by Alkanah W. Carper age 43 resides at Left Hand, Roane Co., WV and William C. McCrosky age 40 resides Pigion Creek, Roane Co., WV. "That said Charles Drake while in the line of duty at or near Petersburgh, Hardy Co. in the state of Virginia did on the 1st day of December 1862 become disabled in the following manner: he was affected in his right seed or testicle which is growing painful each year and disables him from performing any hard labor and he said Charles Drake on or about the last of May 1863 near Weston, Lewis Co., WVa step on a rolling stone while in the line of duty and did dislocate his right ankle which disables him one half at least from performing manual labor. we were with the said Charles Drake at the time he contracted each of the said disabilities and know these facts by our own personal observation both being present." Legend has it that Charles Drake was taken prisoner at the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain in Virginia. He made his escape after 12 days, and took 13 days reaching the Union lines and a potion of the time surviving on greens made by boiling sour-gum, sassafrass, and greenbrier leaves. Charles served as school trustee for over twelve years.
