George Briggs Dies Friday
Upstanding Citizen of Cheshire Community for Half Century - funeral Sunday
George H Briggs, successful farmer and a stalwart, respected citizen, died at about 10 o'clock Friday night at his home back of and below Cheshire on what is known locally as the "second bottoms".
Death was due to a complication of ailments. he had been ill for two weeks, his condition becoming critical several days ago, but for a long while he had shown the growing infirmities of his years.
In His 77th Year
Mr Briggs was born at or near Athens on April 26, 1858, and his age was 76 years, 4 months and 12 days. He was a son of William and Olive Parker Briggs.
For a half century or more he had lived in the Cheshire community. On Nov21, 1883, he married Ann E Cooughenour, who preceded him in death. He is survived by two children, Mrs HA Kirby, who lived with him and David W Briggs, who owns and lives on an adjoining farm once the property of Alva Agee. There survive also two brothers and a sister, Edward J Briggs, Yuma, Colorado, Charles E, Cleveland, and Mrs HC Cameron, Athens.
Funeral services were held at the Cheshire Baptist Church, of which the decedent was a member at 2 o'clock Sunday with REv Geo, Sagen in Charge. Burial wa in Gravel Hill cemetery.
Mr Briggs was a member of the Little Kyger Grange, the Modern Woodman and Pomona Grange.
He was an industrious and progressive farmer, an exemplary citizen, a kind and loyal and prudent husband and father, and down through the years he steadily commanded the respect and esteem of all who came in contact with him. And he was a jovial, genial man, certain to be missed in every circle in which he had moved.
