Janet Whitney Bowyer
Janet Whitney Bowyer of Charleston, died on Friday, March 12, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born July 3, 1925, in Spencer, W.Va., the only child of the late Silas Pembroke and Orlie Rhodes Whitney. She moved with her family to Charleston at an early age, attended local schools and graduated in 1942 from Charleston High School. She attended and graduated from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., and was a charter member of its Grafton Society.
In 1965 she was employed by the late President Marshall Buckalew as an interim assistant in the Financial Aid Office of Morris Harvey College. She retired after twenty-three years, serving as Assistant to the Academic Dean, Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Fiscal Affairs, Director of the Budget, Assistant Registrar and Registrar. Upon retirement in 1988 she and her husband were winter residents of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Janet was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for over 55 years. She served on its board and was treasurer and a group leader of the United Methodist Women. She was also active and held several leadership positions in many local civic and social organizations.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Smith Bowyer; a son, Brent Whitney Bowyer and his wife, Frances Anne Bowyer; and two grandchildren, Christopher Lee Bowyer, a senior engineering student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Va., and Anne Whitney Bowyer, a junior business student at the University of San Diego, San Diego, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Christ United Methodist Church in Charleston. Following the service there will be a reception at the church in her honor.

The body has been cremated.
