Lawrence D. Smitty Carpenter, 92, of Salem Street, Rutland, left his family and friends Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, from Overbrook Center in Middleport.
Born April 1, 1916, at Rutland, to the late Elza and Dora Nelson Carpenter, he was a railroad trackman, Army veteran of World War II, member of the First Southern Baptist Church at Pomeroy and member of the Feeney-Bennett Post No. 128 of the American Legion at Middleport.
He is survived by a son, Harold R. Bob (Joyce) Carpenter of Pickerington; stepson, Kenneth (Betty) Longstreth of Langsville; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his parents; four wives: first, Lillie Belle Price Carpenter, second, Lillian Rowley Carpenter, third, Lena Knapp Carpenter, and fourth, Clarice Longstreth Carpenter; two sons, Carroll D. and Jerry E. Carpenter; and four sisters and three brothers.
Services will be noon Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Pomeroy, with Pastor Lamar OBryant officiating. Burial will follow in the Standish Cemetery at Dexter.
Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at the Birchfield Funeral Home in Rutland.
